Array Reporter at Cherry Blossom!!! I am so excited I couldn't just post this on the Cherry Blossom thread.
I was contacted today by an editor from the Baltimore Sun, she saw the tournament on Fred, and is sending a Reporter and Photographer to the Cherry Blossom on Sunday!
Wooot! -
Cool. Now, why was a reporter looking at FRED? -

Array Damn, now I'm more disappointed that I can't go (AC tournament in the city+girlfriend coming to visit).
On another note, I agree, why on earth would an editor for The Sun be looking at Ask Fred? Are they a fencer? -

Array Woohooo! FRED makes good!
That's super cool that the CBO is getting media attention.
I'd also be interested to know how the reporter ended up on FRED, like whether there was a real-life connection, they just googled fencing touranaments, or what.

Array I honestly have no clue, and she didn't seem to know a lot about fred or fencing.
Too bad you're not coming this year epeelion. I thought the NYAC event was cancelled for some reason? or is that fencer's club? -

Array Yeah, the Fencer's Club open was cancelled, likely because of the MC. I think the MC is going to be slightly smaller than the last few, but more than half of the people are As, and my girlfriend is one of them. Thus, incentive for me to stick around here. That and not having to pay for a train ride. -

-p Think about what time of year it is in Washington, and the name of the tournament. I am sure the reporter googled "Cherry Blossom" -

He was confused over the new name of AskJeeves and wanted information about replacing the chain link around his back yard. "Why do you say this to me, when you know I will kill you for it?" - Zod -

Array We should have a betting pool on whether his story contains the names Zorro, Cyrano or D'Artagnan, and whether or not the phrase "Curses, foiled again" appears in it. Use the Shift key, people! Keyboard manufacturers everywhere are ineffably saddened when you ignore what they made just for you! -

* Go seed the reporter with select quotes
* Profit!
Wow, no need to even omit a few steps!

I remember being pretty pleased when FRED finally broke the first page of results for "fencing tournaments". Then one day he hit number one for that phrase and I did a little dance! For some reason, the Birmingham International beat FRED out for years for the phrase "fencing tournament" (no "s"), but FRED finally got that one last year sometime. Now FRED even rates those little extra links, the "more results from..." thing, and some summary text that appears to be written either by a human, or a least some process outside of FRED (the phrase "Database holding American fencing registration details and results" appears nowhere in FRED).
But for some reason FRED is about 390th for the single term "fencing".
Oh well, f.net gets #1 for that! Wheee!

Array Better facts than most of this type of article (be aware of this whenever reading any article about ANYthing), and a nice focus on Anne-Marie. Good press! Array Can't trust journalists. They always get something wrong. Sneaky bastards. "Why do you say this to me, when you know I will kill you for it?" - Zod Similar Threads -
