The purpose of this thread as compared to the other ones is to consolidate DATA. I plan to post weapon ratings data in relation to sections to assess regional variations. Could you predict without looking at data whether the Pacific NW has better or worse saber, epee and foil RATINGs as compared to national data? Coaching plays a major role in obtaining GOOD results, which might also reflect as Ratings.
It is interesting that Askfred.Net has data in over 22,000 fencers without complete national penetration, but there is USFA data in only 18,135 fencers? -

I was under the impression the USFA had 20,000 or so fencers. If we have 18000 now, and I'd say unlikely to pick up too many memberships before the end of the year, are we shrinking or was I misremembering the historical numbers? -

Array 18,000 is competitive members. All those parents (and coach-associate, etc., etc.) count towards the overall totals, but not the competitive membership.

That does make a bit of a difference. -

Would you be so kind as to also post the breakdown of rated fencers by gender. Thanks
Side note on how to use this info:
NJ is having its D3 quals this weekend, and MS has 60 signed up and askfred projects it being a C2. There are 16 Ds signed up, and to get it up to a C3 requires 24 Ds. Using the new division info, I see that there are "only" 32 eligible male Ds in the whole division, so to get the C3, 75% of all Ds would have to show up.
If I was a truly crazed parent, I could work the list to see if I could brow beat 8 lower skilled Ds to show up and increase my son’s chances of getting a C. But I am not that crazed, and besides my son would whack me with his sabre if I even tried, but it is an interesting ploy.

Array I'm not sure how this: Originally Posted by JEC Total Fencers ---- 18185 ----- 18185 ----- 18185 can be accurate. It seems to assume that all competitive fencers fence all three weapons. This is not true. I have never picked up a sabre in my life and would not expect to see myself listed in the "total sabre fencers" column.
As such, this: Originally Posted by JEC U unrated fencers -- 16310 --- 14894 --- 14721 cannot be accurate either since it seems to be derived from total fencers minus rated fencers.
Since the "total fencers" in any given weapon looks shakey, any conclusions drawn about whether any given weapon has a higher percentage of (highly)rated fencers would also appear to be shakey. Array But on the other hand, the fact that A's make up 5% of the sabre ratings, 6% of the foil ratings, and 11% of the epee ratings are not shaky. -

A's are 0.6% (saber), 3.0% (epee) and 1.1% (foil) of the available fencers. True many fencers limit themselves to a single weapon or two. The numbers quoted by MyrddinsPrecint are for those who have a rating in that particular weapon. -

Yeah, FRED has lots of old fencers in the data that are probably no longer members. Note however, that FRED decays their ratings each summer anyway, so the ratings data is still accurate to what they would be were the fencer to re-join the USFA. Yes, I was very specifically saying that, because the difference between, say, foil and sabre isn't really as big as these numbers make it sound. The point is that neither of our numbers are fully accurate, I just tend to think that my numbers are at the very least more useful. -

Array More dumb stats:
There are three fencers with an 07 rating in all three weapons:
Urgelles-Diaz, Isael
Jno-Finn, Davis
Hogan, Benjamin A
6416 members have at least one rank.
Ranking fencers based on their combined weapon rankings gives the top 10 three weapon fencers:
Seal, Julie T
Meehan, Justin X
Gutkovskiy, Stanislav *
Marsh-Senic, Ann E
Stroud, Andrew N
Herrod, Christopher N
Sexton III, Ray L
Pipkin, Joseph M

Array Now we can have fun with numbers and supplement discussion elsewhere.
Quick statistics, rated female fencers over total rated fencers:
Sabre: 25%
Epee: 22.3%
Foil: 25%
Total: 24%
Total women over total fencers: 30.2%
Although I think this relates to a slightly dead discussion. -
From that, there are nearly 2X as many male Sabre As as female, a bit more than 2X as many male foil As as female, and not quite 4X as many male Epee As as female.
