Possible new material for fencing kit?

Was watching the Gadget Show tonight (here in the UK) and saw a feature where they were showing a beanie hat with this "D3O" putty/gel material which is soft when handled but on impact becomes hard. It stopped a hammer blow to the "head" (well, they used a melon).

Here is the website for the D3O material itself:

Could be useful in gloves, plastrons, bibs etc?

Non-newtonian fluids as to be used in fencing gear has already been discussed in some thread in the armory section.

I beleive we concluded that it might be expensive, and that it would be difficult to come up with something to contain the substance that wouldn't break or being uncomfortable.

I believe LP has a mask design in the works that will incorporate this material in the bib.

In the same thread Myrddins was talking about. I'm too lazy to track it down…

I wouldn't want to wear any of those gloves for fencing ; )

Their "sheet metal" sounds like it might get around some of the problems we were bringing up in the old thread about the issues with any gel based substance. And clearly they've gotten past some of the issues..... but I'd still like to see it tested a bunch before I buy it......

The problem with the D30 foam/gel is it required a hard backing surface ie bone to work correctly...otherwise it was jsut real expensive foam...

and lets not even go into the cost...
