| Welcome to the forums Timo! I'm sure everyone else on the board will agree when I say you should definately try fencing out. Its a great sport but has a lot of growing to do.
If you do decide to fence take up sabre, the greatest of the three weapons, and stay away from the smelly epeeists.

| It's true, fencing is the king of sports and sabruers are the kings of fencing.
I highly recommend fencing, I've only been doing it 2 years and really really love it

| Thank's for the replys. I sent an email to the only local club making sure that one of 8 spots in the beginning 1 class is still open. If I'm in the class, is there anything I (c/sh)ould do before the class starts May 5? |

If you do decide on sabre (which is the best), ignore the epeeists trying to make you take up their weapon which is boring. Welcome to the Forum!

| I really hope you join in the fun. I'm 52 and just started in January. My advice to you is not only to get in shape, but also, when you feel ready, try to reserve another night during the week, preferably a couple of days after your class to go and practice with some folks. I've found that two sessions a week make a big difference over one. It's a good way to internalize what you're learning and start applying it practically. It's also a great deal of fun. |

| Well Timo, It's good that you're fencing. I'd stay away from the hyperactive sabreurs if I were you. The epeeists are the people to hang with.
Fence EPEE!
Good luck and welcome!

| Fencing truly is the best thing you could do with yourself. And you definitely should consider epee, because it will be your best friend.
I don't know what it says about me that my best friend is my epee though...

| Sabre all the way!
And try not to start with foil and be corrupted. Honestly I think its dumb to start in a different weapon than you actually intend fence. Fencing the other weapons now and then can help you improve on certain things in your primary if done correctly but the whole foil first thing is outdated.

However, I suggest sabre. It's a lot of fun, plus it's vicious. Oh, and it gives you wiiiiiings! |

| You should start with foil, move to sabre, realise that they are both vapid and superficial weapons, and move on to epee! It's that simple!
Good luck!

Good luck! | Oy, Tim? As a friend, if you know what's good for you, you won't listen to epeeists. They don't know what they're talking about. As the Grand Queen of Sabre, I will reward you richly for converting to sabre. |

Take my advice, Fence the pure weapon, fence epee!

If you'll look at my avatar, you'll see a sensible, upper-class, SANE, sabrist. She is so refined, and you can't help but want to be like her. Now, if you'll look at our dear friend maple's avatar, you see and insane guy who doesn't even have any pigment in his skin. Will you believe the nuthouse escapee, or the smart pretty girl? |

| Work with the Coaches at your club Hi Timo,
Welcome to f.net, and welcome to fencing! I am just getting back into fencing after a 20 year hiatus. I wish I hadn't let all that time go by before finding this sport again.
At this stage you ought to learn about the sport and about the types of weapon that are available to you. Work with the coaches at your club to figure out how best to progress in fencing. Ask questions and when you get comfortable ask what options there are. It helps if there are enough people who fence with the weapon you're interested in.
I'm currently relearning Foil, but I would eventually like to learn Sabre. Since there are few Sabreuers (sp?) in my area it might not be practical unless and until I can drum up enough interest. Until then I'm quite happy learning Foil.
