| i'd have to say robert jordan. goodkind's books left me with the impression that they're "not quite right." everything seems to fall into place at the proper time - this got quite predictable after reading the first two in the series. it's not a bad series though.
as for jordan, the first few in the wot series are phenomenal books. my only problem with him is he's dragging the series out far too long. you can only develop characters so much before you actually have to have the DO SOMETHING!! the last few books had very little action in them and didn't captivate me as the beginning of the series did. i'll keep reading the series, but i hope he ends it soon (i haven't read the new one yet...)
check out jordan's earlier work (Conan is cool)
L.E. Modesitt's saga of recluse is right up there with jordan's work, but things actually happen in all of the books. highly recommended as are Glen Cook's chronicles of the Black Company (there are 8 or 9 of these now) Cook's portrayal of war, tactics, and the soldier's lives is incredible. add to the mix magic, betrayal, and lots of plot twists and you've got a great series. |
