I need a new job

So I really need to just vent, and everyone living in this house is asleep right now. I will understand if you move to the next thread, just typing this on a forum may be soothing.

I work retail management for a video rental store (I won't mention which one, but it is the biggest) and have been doing so for years now. It has always been a decent job expecially since I have been in school and the hours are flexible. but recently I have been transfered to a new store... the darkest pit in the whole corporation. It is 2:13 in the morning, I just got home. I have class at 11 in the morning. I need to practice, but I am going to be too tired, and this happens at least 3 or 4 times a week. I never get to see my wife nor my friends. I never have time to eat a decent meal. The job has assimialted everything.

The reason is that the store is so back logged from other tasks that have not been done in a long time, maybe even years. And I find that with all the catching up that is necessary, that my daily tasks keep me there til the wee hours of the morning. I was warned of this befor I was transfered and asked not to be. But my corporation sent me there anyways.

If you are still bearing with me, and not mocking my whiney post (which I would understand and might do in your place), I ask for your advice. I'm graduating this May, and I want to get better at fencing, the only thing I really want to do in life. So I need a new job, one that will allow me the flexibility to fence. Any suggestion is fine, it doesn't even need to make sense, as long as it will allow me to devote time to my wife and sport.

thank you for reading my rant, I shall now lie down and sleep.

The fact you have management experience should help you get something, especially as you're graduating soon. Do you have experience in other areas, or is it only in retail? What is it you're gonna graduate with?

I have a really good rule when it comes to jobs:
If your job cannot get done in the hours that you are being paid. There is something wrong. Either you are not suited for the job (you are unable to do the job) or there is something wrong with the company's expectations for the position.

In either case, the answer is the same, if the company or you are unable to resolve it. LEAVE.... Do not invest any further time in these lost causes. Your time, your health, your relationship(s) and YOU deserve better.

Your didn't create this situation, it is not your responsibility to fix it for them.

Changing jobs is often necessary for career development. Start looking around even before you make the move. Take your time, look for a job that suits your skills, personality, and time committments.

Finding a new job while you are still working takes the pressure off from taking the first thing that comes along. The annoyance of the existing job also can be a powerful motivator to keep looking. Everytime something frustrates you apply for another bunch of jobs.... it helps keep your sanity.

You might find you need to take a few courses, or work on your resume a bit.... take the time to do this.

When you get to an interview, remember that you are there to interview your new boss as well. I have turned down jobs that I have been offered because I knew it wasn't a good fit (even if they didn't see it). Spend time thinking about what jobs or aspects of different jobs you like. Tailor your search to your preferences. You are going to spend a lot of your life working, you might as well enjoy what you're doing.

I hope this helps!
Good luck.

You have run afoul of Boyle's Law: If not controlled, all work will flow to the competent person until he submerges.

Take a deep breath, because it looks as though your company considers you to be 'the competent person'. Flattering, I suppose...but they also seem to consider you expendable.

Don't send your resume to Circuit City. They're laying off 3,000 people and going to rehire a bunch of guys for less money. That's the plan.

Let's stand up for those people!

hey everyone, thanks for the support. I definitely don't plan on going into retail anymore, so I will stand by you in representing the Circut City people. And as for all the work shifting its way to me, I bring it on myself I suppose, just try to achieve a little too much considering the people I work with and for.

And in response to the question of my other talents and my degree, I'm not an exceptionally useful person. I majored in Philosophy, because it was fun. The down side to that is philosophers don't get many jobs.

Thinking about real estate for a while. I am very good at selling stuff, and I had fun buying my house. Anyone know any real estate agents who fence?

ok, I am gonna crash early tonight. night everyone!
