So was the call questionable like someone mentioned?
[Are you coming to the Okawa Open again this year? *insert shameless plug here* ]
Hah, we were just joking, it wasn't really me that it happened to. And heck yeah I'll be there! Gotta defend my title and all, plus it's one of the few times a year now a days that I actually get to see coach. :'(

Click on the comments view at the bottom. Seems like most comments are about a previous column by Mr. Hansen about some person named Miles Simon.

Still, oso97 posted a comment (practically verbatim from the one above).

As for Mr. Hansen, I guess he should stick with entertainment and commentary and not try to delve into journalism. USAF? That's the Air Force. USFA is Fencing Association. Ivan Lee the epee champion? He doesn't care and he doesn't know. Apathy and Ignorance, two of the worst traits for any decent journalist.

I'm not sure. Haven't heard anything about that yet. I can try to find out. I know we have notebooks and pencils... ehhh.
Speaking of which, do you know who I should contact about getting the website for the tournament, okawaopen.com, on the socal schedule?

Boy, that first article is terrible. Guess he missed "Feel Good Writing 101" and "Accuracy in Writing" at journalism school.

Yes! More bags! Mine got a rip on the inner pocket just recently and I now need a new one. Notebooks and pencils... Not as much so! Haha, and as far as who to contact, my first guess would be Janet Gegan possibly? I know I get the email reminders from her periodically, so she would probably be able to do that for you, if not, I'm sure she'd know who to get you in touch with. Let me know if you need her contact info.

Please allow me to apologize for Greg Hansen. He is a well known local idiot and as best I can tell resents having to report on anything other than U of A basketball. Please don't pay any attention to him, none of us do. How he keeps his job is beyond me.

I think we should all write letters to the editor. His reporting is both incompetent and reckless.

There was a guy with an extremely gigantic lens looking very official taking pictures. I have no idea where the pictures are.

The comments are at the end of the article. There's an envelope you click on to view them.

Agreed that Greg Hansen didn't get his facts straight, but really newspaper articles on fencing rarely do. He was just a little worse than some. Sure write letters and call him on his lazy work, but I won't hold my breath. He writes one thing, then a month later writes a column with the completely opposite view. Just filling space sometimes. I was just happy to see a couple local articles that noticed the fencing tournament had even been here. I was also happy to see that some of the restaurants in La Placita Village stayed open extra hours for the tournament. I didn't even mention them because I assumed they would be closed and it was nice to know that someone, somewhere cared about providing good service.

Since another NAC (Div II/III) is coming to Tucson next October, do any of you have recommendations on things that went well or didn't do well on your visit? Hotels good or bad, renting a car good or bad decision, restaurant food and service good or bad? Leave comments now while your memory is fresh and people in the fall may thank you. Also anything about the event facilities or arrangement you think they could improve?

Just clearing it up a little. If I'm mistaken, please let me know.
you're wrong on almost all counts.

Gamal's LAST name is Mahmoud, as is Samir's. They are both Egyptian, and ARE, in fact, brothers.

Note: The October NAC is also Cadet.

The venue was fine, no crowding issues. I liked the upstairs finals room. At $4.00 (with in and out priveleges) parking was a bargain. Parking lot to checkin table was a 3 minute walk (Atlanta was more like 20 min).

Because my kids fenced Friday and Monday with two off days in between we avoided the host hotels and stayed at a resort in the foothills 20 minutes north of the Convention Center. Since it was "off-season" in Tucson, we paid only slightly more than the host hotel rate for a 600 square ft room with resort amenities: hiking trails, tennis, multiple swimming pools, etc. It wouldn't make sense to do this without the off days, but if anyone finds themselves with a similar schedule it's definitely worth considering.
