    Referee shoes

I'm not sure if this the best place for this, but since this is the appropriate place for fencing shoes...

Since I'm finding I'm refereeing more than I'm fencing, I decided to get a decent pair of shoes for refereeing. I'm not a big fan of the tennis/sport shoe for suits or grey slacks / blue sport coat. I needed a pair of black (or brown/whatever) shoes. Talking this over with a friend, he referred me to Ecco Shoes. They're extremely comfrotable and made for long periods of standing, the problem is that they're expensive ($150 ~ $250). I recommend them (if you can afford them).

Has anyone tried any other shoe for refereeing?

I echo the vote for Eccos. But I bought mine on sale - $80. Even with hard orthos in my shoes they're really great!

Plus, worn with a gray tweed skirt they apparently make me look like a British novelist - or at least that's what Mary Annavedder thinks.

As a referee shouldn't you really have 7-league boots or something?

    Two other comfortable manufacturers are:
    Dansko www.dansko.com
    Shoes for Crews www.shoesforcrews.com

SfC are marketed to food service and their primary marketing is their non-slip nature, but with a number of years in food service, I think they are best. I have been out of FS for about 2 years, but I still buy their shoes because of the comfort and padding for walking around all day. I have heard good things from nurses about Dansko. The other brand that is all the rage with nurses is Crocs, but they don't have any styles yet that would go with refereeing uniforms. At least not on most people, that is!

Believe it or not, Dr. Scholl's make some semi-stylish black shoes for men and women. They are quite comfortable to referee in and available for +/- $30 at Walmart.

I don't ref professionally, but I imagine DocMartens (preferably the 'almond toe' model) would be comfy to ref in too. Providing you've worn them long enough beforehand to have 'broken them in'.

I have a pair of well broken-in black Reebok walking shoes that I referee in. When polished they look decent. However, I noticed at the last tournament I reffed at with a nice shiny floor, they weren't getting much of a grip, so I guess it's time to replace them (after nearly 15 years)...

My current reffing shoes are Bass. Not great comfort-wise on a long day.

My previous pair were Dexters and they were wonderful. Unfortunately everything wears out eventually.

Sneakers should not be worn. If they're all black and sufficiently subtle you can get away with them, but... Wearing fencing shoes to referee in is right out (although done unfortunately often).

My everyday (non-reffing, non-sneaker) shoes are Rockports and I love them for comfort. I've had several different (pairs of) Rockports over the past few years and they've always been comfortable. They'd be acceptable for refereeing in, although I use a more traditional dress shoe for that (Rockport certainly makes dress shoes, I've just never bought them for that).

    I wear these.

A shoe from sandro moscoloni, the sheep skin lining inside makes them incredibly soft and comfortable for long periods of time. The downside being, they do get kind of warm, and my feet tend to get kinda of sweaty by the end of long day.

Birkenstock makes shoes other than just their stereotypical sandle, some of which look decent and are very comfy.

Yeah, I wear something like that, but they're Italian and very stylish. A recent movie star appeared on camera exclusively in them. They're very in right now.
