Today the Under-20 fencers begin competition at the Junior/Cadet World
Championships in Turkey, and U.S. athletes' achievement of at least one
medal per day continues. Sada Jacobson (19, Dunwoody, Ga./Nellya
Fencers/Yale '04) has won a bronze medal in the Junior Women's Sabre
competition.
Jacobson defeated Italy's Rosanna Pagano 15-6 to reach the final of eight.
In a touch of bad luck for the U.S. team, Jacobson and Mariel Zagunis (17,
Beaverton, Ore./Oregon Fencing Alliance) met for the bout to reach the medal
rounds. Jacobson won 15-10. She was then defeated by Louise Bond-Williams of
Great Britain in the semifinal bout, 15-14. Zagunis was the defending '01
Under-20 Champion in the event.
Zagunis soundly defeated Margarita Joukova of Russia 15-2 to reach the final
of eight. She finishes 6th. Sada's sister Emily Jacobson (16, Dunwoody,
Ga./Nellya Fencers) was defeated in her attempt to reach the final of eight
by Ying-Ying Bao of China, 15-13, who was the eventual gold medallist.
