Cadet World Champs - Day 3

For the third day in a row, a U.S. fencer has earned a medal at the Junior
and Cadet World Championships. Benjamin Bratton (16, Richmond Hill,
N.Y./Westbrook Foundation) has won a bronze medal in the Under-17 Men's Epee
event.

This is the first Men's Epee medal earned by a U.S. fencer at any world
championships since 1975.

Bratton defeated Czech fencer Matyes Ambroz 15-13 to reach the round of
eight, and then defeated Sweden's Joakim Agnarsson 15-10 to reach the medal
rounds. He then fell to Konstantine Tchernov of Russia in a tight 15-13 bout
in an attempt to reach the medal round.

More New York athlete results: Emily Cross (15, New York, N.Y./Fencers Club)
and Jacqueline Leahy (17, Aurora, Colo./Fencers Club) both reached the final
of eight in the Cadet Women's Foil competition. Jessica Florendo (16, Forest
Hills, N.Y./Fencers Club) just missed the round of eight, falling 15-14 to
Russia's Aida Chanaeva.

Cross defeated Tatiana Chevtsova of Russia 15-8 to reach the eight, and was
then defeated by Italy's Carlotta Gottardelli, 15-7. Gottardelli is ranked
14th in the world Under-20 standings.

Leahy defeated Hungary's Mercedess Lemberg 15-12 to reach the eight and then
lost her bout to reach the medal round to Benedetta Durando of Italy 15-1.

Last year, an all-time most successful year for the U.S., three cadets
reached the final of eight. This year's total: ten, in five different
weapons. This is an exceptional result, noting that this year's cadet team
is very young; only four have reached the age of 17.
