Cadet World Champs - Day 2

Second Day, Second Bronze
On the second day of the 2002 Junior and Cadet World Championships, Luther
Clement (16, Prairie Village, Kans./Kans. City Fencing Athletic Club) has
won the U.S.'s second bronze medal. All three U.S. cadet men's sabre fencers
have finished in the top eight of the field.

Clement defeated Romanian Mihnea Rotariu 15-9 to reach the round of eight,
and then unfortunately faced U.S. teammate Alex Krul (16, Beverly Hills,
Calif./Falcon Fencing Club) to reach the medal round. Clement won 15-12.He
was then defeated by eventual silver medallist Franz Boghicev of Germany,
15-10.Boghicev is ranked 10th in the world Under-20 standings.

All three U.S. cadet men's sabre fencers reached the final of eight! Patrick
Ghattas defeated Venezuela's Jansen Herman 15-9 to reach the round of eight
before falling to Boghicev in his attempt to reach the medal rounds; Ghattas
has finished 6th. Krul defeated France's Alexandre Rosseau 15-10 to reach
the round of eight and finished 7th.

In the Cadet Women's Epee event, all three U.S. fencers reached the round of
32. Ruth Schneider (17, Rochester, N.Y./North West Fencing Center) finished
20th, Jasmine McGlade (16, residing London, Eng./Northern Colo. Fencers)
finished in a tie for 24th, and Alli Schirtz (15, Beaverton, Ore./North West
Fencing Center) finished 26th.
