Results from the Junior World Championships in Antalya, Turkey have begun to
roll in, and already U.S. fencers are earning medals. At the age of only 13,
Brendan Meyers (13, New York, N.Y./Fencers Club) won a bronze in the
Under-17 Men's Foil event. Four U.S. fencers have reached the final of
eight -- a fantastic result for this group of young fencers.
Meyers defeated Italy's Andrea Baldini 15-14 to reach the final of eight and
then defeated Balint Botlo of Slovakia 15-10 to reach the final four. He
then was defeated by Russia's Renal Ganeev 15-12 in his attempt to reach the
final bout.
Dimitri Kirk-Gordon (16, Calif. Fencing Academy/Campbell, Calif.) also
reached the final of eight in the Cadet Men's Foil competition. The third
U.S. Cadet, Enoch Woodhouse (16, Boston, Mass./Boston Fencing Club), also
turned in a fantastic result, finishing 9th.
This was the first World Championships for Meyers and Kirk-Gordon and only
the second for Woodhouse, who finished 24th in last year's competition.
And Mariel Zagunis (17, Beaverton, Ore./Oregon Fencing Alliance) and Emily
Jacobson (16, Dunwoody, Ga./Nellya Fencers) both reached the final of eight,
placing fifth and eighth respectively in the Cadet Women's Sabre event.
Sarah Parker (14, Fayetteville, Ga./Nellya Fencers) was defeated by Poland's
Marta Wator 15-13 in her bout to reach the top 16. She finished 17th.
Stay tuned! More results are available at
