Some can, some can't. Principally they are thrusting weapons, for reasons of practicality in their use.
And on to your sig, wihch is great.
Here's a quote I read: "We who are about to die. . . . Give you the finger." |
ReVel or Die sent me this PM, in response to the post quoted above. He tried, but was unable, to post it here for everyone. So now I'm making an attempt at it. Quote: |

Perhaps a type of rapier; but to be honest I am a but a learner here; that first post is illustrative of my current perceptions and so I am willing to stand corrected if my lack of knowledge has resulted in me making a false assumtion.
So what is the type of sword (often portrayed in [musketeer] films/books), that one duels with, which has a flat-ish looking surface with both cutting edge(s) and point? Are these types of rapier (but not representative of all rapiers) with a cutting edge(s)? My current understanding leads me to believe that the sabre was originally a cavalry weapon (actually, apparently, descended from the Oriental scimitar), and so would't have been a likely candidate. Giacomo de Grassi developed what was called the "single sword" which was a cutting and thrusting rapier with a basket hilt in, I think, the 16th century..anyone else who has thoughts on this, do speak up.
By the way, thanks for the compliments on the sig...extra points for guessing where the quotes are from?
(end post)
I would have liked to have publically posted this to invite others to comment, but it keeps telling me that I have 'specified a username for my post'.
Anyway...what is your reply...? | Some could, some couldn't.
From my limited knowledge, earlier rapiers (which look remarkably similar to riding swords), had a more cutting-oriented blade. The blade cross section varied widely. These videos are more of a response to the SCA's draw-cut and injury-simulation rules, IMO. But they do demonstrate quite nicely that the percieved notion of rapiers being effective cutters is perhaps not as appropriate a generalization as some sources would lead people to believe.
The tip-cut controversy still rages on.
As for the sabre, that's a completely different animal, and one I am still largely ignorant of. If you want a really good read on it, and a few other swords, (which I am still working my way through), pick up a copy of J. Christoph Amberger's book, "The Secret History of the Sword".
As for your sig, at a wild guess:
"...Gladiators --)------- I salute you" comes from the movie Gladiator.
"Bring me that horizon" comes from Master and Commander.
Which indicates you are Russel Crowe fan.

| Thank You Rabid Monk...if this post shows...to the others, I am a sabreist but my interest in swords is a general one, hence the historical interest in the others.
So...what kind of sword would one of Dumas' Musketeers have used?

I was getting scared there for a moment... nice choice in weapon! Do you do SCA, or do you just study historical weapons? |

| no, no neither; but actually, if I am honest, I am simply interested in history and historical tales/adventures. SCA, which I have just looked up, does sound interesting though. I have to admit I do like historical costume as well as the duelling itself.... fencing is part of my interest in history and adventure. And my father used to do it.

| The SCA is an odd organisation.
Some people lswear by them, some people consider them woefully misguided.
I went to a couple local meetings, and wasn't terribly impressed.
But the local chapters vary widely. Do some research.
As for the Musketeers: I think they'd have used rapiers. I honestly cannot say what kind. I think most rapiers were custom made, so there would have been lots of variation.
