New York City Grand Prix of Women's Foil

For Immediate Release
June 16, 2002

The New York City Grand Prix of Women's Foil has come to a close with a
victory in the team competition by the increasingly impressive team from
Russia. The Russians defeated Bulgaria, France, Italy and Romania soundly on
their way to the gold medal - no opponent was able to score more than 37
points against them.

In their first encounter of the day, the young U.S. team of Andrea Ament
(19, Gates Mills, Ohio/Saturn Fencing Center/Notre Dame '05), Emily Cross
(15, New York, N.Y./Fencers Club), Susan Jennings (24, New York,
N.Y./Fencers Club) and Erinn Smart (22, New York, N.Y./Westbrook Foundation)
defeated Great Britain's team 45-42 to advance to the final eight. Smart
fenced especially strongly, coming back from a defecit to outscore her
veteran British opponent 8-2 and finish the match.

Next the U.S. team was defeated by the veteran first-seeded team from Italy,
45-23. In the matches to determine 5th through 8th place, the U.S. team was
defeated by France, 45-23, and then by Poland, 45-41, to finish 8th.
