Not only that, Benji has beaten Bas Verwijen before, to make the 32s at one of the other world cups. Som Benji has a good chance at the 8s. As for Soren, he has a tough bout, I don't know if he's fenced Robieri before. But good for them!

I think it was to make the 64 in Kuwait.

Benji's path has been blessed by Moses.

Nice! Though the scores versus Germany and France were ugly, the important thing was how we did relative to Canada and Venezuela, right? If so, this was an excellent result. Even if not, top-8 is good! Congrats to the team.

The gallery and the films are interesting with respect to a number of ongoing/recurring conversations here on Fnet.

    1) Short v. Tall: Find the photos of Jannet and his Japanese adversary who (at least in the moment the photos were taken) illustrates exactly how not to fence a tall person. That is, at the tall person's distance. If the Japanese fencer had won, we would have seen lots of touches at close distance with prises du fer, IMHO.

    2) The passivity rule as interpreted by le haute niveau. The elite seem to have developed some shuck to get around a passivity card. I'm not sure I completely understand it. In Boisse v. Tourchine, at the end of the first period, one or the other gives a small salute outside of distance, signifying that he doesn't want to continue while the other pretends to fence until time. The commentator says (in French) "...and now they're clowning around" after the signal. There is an explanation after which is a bit cut up. Can anyone fill me in on this?

    3) The power of the French grip properly employed. In the final, Tourchine beats Boisse at his own game of attack into preparation. He scores one touch in the first period which really must have broken Eric's concentration. It was certainly facilitated by having just an extra centimeter of distance. I think it was that touch that made Eric question his attacks so much that he never really found the right attack distance. Which is exactly how he lost in the Olympic final: trying to find an attack after having taken too many attacks into his prep. The tactical situation Boisse had to overcome would have been more difficult to construct if Tourchine hadn't selected a French grip.

Regarding recent discussions about the use of the transparent mask, i think there are several pictures in the gallery of the fencers with the "ordinary" masks thats capture the emotions very good (and yes, i dont want it to be compulsory with the transparent in epee).

Take a look in the team gallery at the four pictures in the row when the polish team scores the last point against russia, just great pictures.

That's an incredibly low score for a team bout. Very interesting.
