| Kent, Ohio or Geneseo, NY? My wife was just offered jobs in Kent, Ohio and in Geneseo, NY. We live in Buffalo now.
Would anyone be able to offer any insight into either area? Please do not limit your input to fencing.

| "Kent" rhymes with "tent," which protects you from the elements.
On the other hand, "Geneseo" rhymes with "Crisco,"* which is delicious.
I say it's a toss up.
*it does in my book

| Derek runs a fencing club at Kent college, as well as a non-collegiate club.
He's mainly an epee man, and pretty good at that, but I've never been to his club personally.

| Well, I can't comment on New York, but Kent is a nice place to be. I've been here almost a year and I quite like it. There are lots of parks and trails. We do have a club in Kent. We practice on Mondays in Hartville (about a half hour south) and Thursdays in Kent. There are a number of other clubs within about an hour drive. If there's anything in particular you want to know about, feel free to drop me a PM.

If there's anything in particular you want to know about, feel free to drop me a PM. | What is the overall "attitude" of people in Kent? What is important to them?
For example, here is how I would describe my current hometown, Buffalo:
- The people are rather apathetic and pessimistic in many ways, but RABIDLY proud of our area. When approached, I think most Buffalonians are pretty friendly, although prone to "grumble." On the other hand, in my experience, most Buffalonians wait to be approached as opposed to beginning the introductions themselves.
- Our sports teams are EXTREMELY important to us.
- We are very proud of our history and local architecture and park system, although people are not especially "outdoorsy". The hippie/Green/vegetarian scene (whatever you want to call it) is there and strong, but in a rather isolated part of the city. The music scene is there, too, but in an almost underground way. You have to look a little.
- Food is a big part of Buffalo culture, and there are many good restaurants.
- Driving around town, even at rush hour, is rarely a problem.
- The school system in the city is a MESS.
- There is a growing separation between the Haves and Have-nots. The city and area are noticeably segregated along racial, ethnic, and economic lines.
- There are SEVERAL colleges and universities in the region. They attract high-quality students from, literally, all over the world. They rarely integrate into mainstream society, however, and spend most of their time on campus. Once they graduate, they almost never stick around for long. There just aren't any jobs.
- Buffalo thinks of itself as a blue-collar town, but there aren't any factory jobs any more. The biggest employers in the area are restaurants and other service industries, the colleges, and the growing hospital/medical research complexes.
- There is a lot of corruption in government. Everyone complains, but nothing is done.
- Despite all the problems, I really kind of love it here. Believe it or not.
I know it is hard to capture the "essence" of any city or area, but I guess that is what I am trying to get at.
By the way, don't just limit your comments to Kent, OH. I would be interested to know about the whole NE Ohio/Cleveland area.

| Do you like cold winters, or are you ready to try something in more temperate climate? Buffalo is too darned cold for me, but if you like that, stay in upstate NY and enjoy the skiing

| I know you said not to limit this to fencing, but you didn't say to leave fencing out...
Remember that Geneseo is close to Rochester, and now that I'm gone, RFC may be looking for an epee coach again, so don't forget to factor that in. You already get along really well with the Rochester crew from what I've seen, so you'll have fencing friends out there, you already know the area, AND you can still get garbage plates!
Mmmmmm.... garbage plates....

I would be interested to know about the whole NE Ohio/Cleveland area. | Quite a lot of what you say about Buffalo applies to Kent/the greater Cleveland area. Rush hour here can be ugly at times, but overall, it's not bad (and if you're living in Kent, it's not a problem). From what I understand, the Kent school system is pretty good, others around the area... not necessarily. Not having kids, I don't pay much attention to the school quality. I don't think there is rampant corruption in our local government, but I could be wrong. There have been some cases. The music scene is pretty well developed. We have Blossom Music Center nearby and plenty of little local bands and venues.
We also have plenty of colleges in the general area. Some students stay, some don't. Most of the people here do seem a bit... sports-obsessed.... we have various museums, The Cleveland Clinic, lots of variety in food (restaurants and grocery stores). As I said, most of what you said about Buffalo can apply to Kent/Cleveland.... oh and if you're into roller coasters, Cedar Point isn't much of a drive...
