Ah, but that started as a short story, then was expanded to novel length in conjunction with the screenplay for the Kubrick movie...

One I really enjoyed, even though it's depressing and only borderline sci-fi, was Silverberg's Dying Inside. I think it's the last thing I read which could be called science fiction before I discovered Robert E. Howard, Fritz Leiber, Andre Norton and the rest of the fantasists...

Reading over the list, Ender's Game could be on the list as well. Brave New World and 1984 made me think; screw that.

I never liked Ray Bradbury.

Isaac Asimov has really good short stories too.
