It's been one year since Canada took command of the international coalition's fighting forces in the Kandahar region of southern Afghanistan.

There have been a lot of battles. Dozens of Canadian soldiers have been killed or wounded. So have hundreds, perhaps thousands, of Afghan soldiers and civilians.

Coalition officials say thousands of Taliban insurgents have died or been captured.

Yet both U.S. President George Bush and the NATO leadership say they expect a fierce offensive from the Taliban when the Afghan spring begins shortly.
