Confused. Junior/U20/U19, Cadet/U17/U16

Please help.

The NACs have events called Junior and Cadet, which appear to be the same as U20 and U17, respectively.

Summer Nationals has U19 and U16, which sometimes also seem to be called Junior and Cadet.

Could someone please help understand? Are they the same? If not, why not have the same age distinctions for all the events in a single season?

There has got to be an easier way to do this.

Argh.

The idea is that if you keep Summer Nationals as U16 and U19 then all of the competitors will be eligible for the next season's championships. This also stops kids that are aging out from blocking out others. Besides why have some points that expire in less than a month?

The junior and cadet seasons end at the JO Championships, not at Summer Nationals. Indeed, the Summer Nationals is the first national event of the season for the juniors and cadets.

That still doesn't explain why Junior would be called U19 for the first event of the season and U20 at subsequent events. I'm sure the reason is staring me in the face, but I don't see it. Anyone?

I have described it as scraping off the expired participants.

The USFA has a season, from August 1 through July 31. You could call it a cycle also.

The Junior Olympic cycle is displaced in time from the USFA cycle/season.

The last event in the USFA cycle/season is the Summer Championships (except for the FIE World Championships).

The Last event in the Junior Olympic cycle is the World Junior Championships, usually in April. After this the oldest cohort can no longer participate. The FIE and the USFA use year of birth for eligibility to the Junior Olympic cycle.

The first event in the successor cycle is the Junior/Cadet U19/U16 event at the Summer Championships (and the qualifiers to it). There is effectively a change of age between the JO Championships and the USFA Summer Championships.

Hope this helps.
