| Country codes? Is there someplace with a list of all the country codes the FIE uses? When I went with my son to a recent World Cup I was surprised because the fencers with CHI on their backs did not look Chinese. Turns out they were from Chile. Which got me wondering, what do the Chinese fencers have on their backs? It took me a long time to find out the POR is for Puerto Rico, and I still don't know why Puerto Rico has its own National team. Aren't they Americans? |

| I remember reading a very conprehensive list of the countries but I can't remember where I found it, probably on a thread somewhere...
Anyway, if you look on the FIE website under "national federations" it will list all the FIE member federations by region, this also includes the 3 letter country code, you can ctrl+F the code to see what country it is. (if you click "search" with a blank field it will list all federations) http://www.fie.ch/Addresses/AddrFed.aspx

| China is CHN and POR is Portugal, not Puerto Rico.
(But then again it might be like some British fencers, who has their "home country" code on their jackets, like ENG for England etc. Looks really silly if you ask me...)

| The reason some Brits have ENG/SCO/WAL/NIR on their backs is that it's required when competing in the Commonwealth Fencing Championships.
Some others have since chosen to get their Home Country abbreviation for other home internationals like the 5 Nations.

Have a nice time!

| The Code for Puerto Rico is PUR. Yes they have American citizenship, but they are a US Territory which grant them the right to be seperate from the US in competing in the Olympics. I thought the same thing until I moved there and found out how different it was. |

| The wikipedia entry is a nice comprehensive list.
If you want in a document form - the 2nd page of the Marx Enterprises order form has a simple table of the 126 most common codes... http://www.marxentpdx.com/html/OrderForm.pdf
Not meant to be a plug for a commercial enterprise... I am not connected with said organization in anyway!
Enjoy!
