Just joined, first post; probably not familiar with the points charts at the USFA web site.

I've reffed Shaito. I was very impressed. Very patient, very accurate, great acceleration, and superb control over all of his movements. Very clean, very smart.

Cute post. Personally, I would have asked "Who are Gerek and Ariel?"

He is a kid from FIT in Dallas. Same club as Castellani.

He's even polite when he argues with you, which I've only had happen once. But then, you have to expect that when you call AIP.

I'm glad to see he got his A07.

He's lefthanded, has very good tip control, is very fast, and has only been fencing 3 1/2 years. My son says he's "an animal", which is meant as a compliment.

Don't forget tall, thin, left handed, and a great sense of timing.

Go to the well until the well is dry. When the well is dry find a new well.

I was watching him at JO's beat Lowden Charles (because I had lost to him, and wanted to know what to do) and one of Zain's more impressive aspects was his ability to hit Charles with a straight counterattack, not closing out, just what would have been a PIL had it been in time, and have Charles just completely wipe out and not hit anything. Requires a degree of timing I can only dream about.

Who were you watching instead? He's one of the more fun people to watch, although I don't know whether that means he's more educational.

Come on! I'm guessing FlyorDie IS Shaito - trying to find out what the "world" thinks of him...

If FlyorDie IS Shaito, that answers the question...... He's good, but he's insecure, so he still worries about what others think - which will prevent him from being really GREAT. This could be because he's young.... Time will tell.

If FlyorDie ISN'T Shaito, well... My apologies! Stick around and watch the final 8 every time and you'll learn more than names.

Watch out for Shaito's sisters, though! I'm told May is the smart one.

I know this thread has been inactive for near 2 years now, but I resigned from fencing 4+ years ago due to a serious occurrence that happened at FIT on Sep 17, 2004 after having beat for the 1st time many of the clubs best fencers including young 14 yr old Zain Shaito, so 3 Fridays ago I started taking kids from our church's youth group to visit FIT and get introduced to this ancient albeit greatest of sports...I reunited with Zain last night, and being that I was 34 at the time I fenced against him, I definitely remembered him well, his manners and his fantastic creativity with the tip of his blade. He is still so quietly confident with zero hint of arrogance and has become quit the young man IMHO, and forever I will champion him as a potential great in our country's growing list of historically great fencers! Good on you Zain, so glad we reunited all these many years later! Fox
