| 4th Annual Fete de Lune Veterans' Tournament From Don Cravey, President of the Clear Lake Fencing Club:
The Clear Lake Fencers Club and I would like to invite you to attend the 4th Annual Fête de Lune Veterans Fencing Tournament, to be held on August 24, 2002, in Houston, Texas, at the Johnson Space Center’s (JSC’s) Gilruth Center. This is the same location as last year, but access will not be through JSC, due to new security measures now in place.
The Fête de Lune will provide Mixed Foil, Épée, and Saber competitions.
There will be awards given for first place male and female competitors in each event, as well as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in the 40’s, 50’s, and 60 and above age categories. These will be presented at our Awards Banquet, to be held at the nearby Nassau Bay Holiday Inn Banquet Room.
The registration fee is $50 for the first weapon (which includes the Banquet), and $10 for each additional weapon. The Awards Banquet fee for non-fencers is $25. Please pre-register by August 12th, since we must receive fees by that week to guarantee your meals.
The tournament is close to a range of hotels located along NASA Road 1. Three of these have reserved blocks of rooms for us at reduced rates.
After fencing, showers and lockers are available for your use at JSC’s Gilruth Center. You might also choose to return to your hotel, just a few minutes’ drive away, before the Awards Banquet at the Holiday Inn.
The event will coincide with the Ballunar Liftoff Festival, which will attract nearly one hundred balloon teams! This should provide some interesting sights for participants and guests. (Unfortunately, the JSC Open House has been canceled due to security concerns at JSC.)
For anyone intending to fly to Houston, we would recommend flying to Hobby Airport, since Bush Intercontinental Airport is much further away (about an hour drive, versus 25 minutes).
The Fête de Lune is one of a handful of veterans' tournaments held each year in the Southwest Section. We hope that our friends who have joined us in the past will be able to make the trip to Houston again this August, and that those who have not yet been a part of our familiar group will take the opportunity to meet and fence with our illustrious guests.
Best of Fencing to you,
Don Cravey, President, CLFC
