Workshop Topics:
-----------------------

* Warm-up Games & Exercises for Fencing:
---------------------------------------
Active participation in these games will demonstrate how they evoke the competitive and/or team spirit, while honing gross motor skills and warming the fencers up for further exercise. The importance of pre-tournament warm-up and appropriate exercises will also be discussed.

* Methods of Group Instruction:
---------------------------------------
Group instruction is perhaps the best method of instructing beginners. However, very little educational material exists concerning effective and practical means of instructing groups of fencers. This presentation addresses group instruction in clubs and schools. Subject matter will include the physical organization of fencers, the role of the instructor, dealing with students of varying levels, imitation versus commands, and more.

* Teaching Fencers to referee:
---------------------------------------
Fencers should become aware of the role and importance of refereeing from their first lesson. Teaching fencers to referee boosts their own ability to analyze the action, and reinforces the need to understand the rules. This presentation will introduce effective means to introduce fencers to the role of referee, and to help them analyze the actions, regardless of the weapon style.

* Problem-Solving during Individual Lessons:
---------------------------------------
There are many sources for drills to use during individual lessons, but few discussions on how to give a lesson. This presentation will deal with methods of giving lessons, especially for coaches who have less experience in this area. Subject matter will include the flow of the lesson, tailoring the lesson for different levels of students, identification and correction of technique, and resolving tactical and responsive problems.

* Teaching/Learning Strategy & Tactics for Club Groups:
---------------------------------------
In many clubs, group lessons are often abandoned after fencers gain some experience, and the learning process becomes more haphazard. This presentation will explore creating group workouts for more experienced fencers, constructive use of the instructor's time, and creating a structured learning and competitive environment to advance experienced fencers.

* Teaching Use of & Defense from Modern Attacks:
---------------------------------------
This presentation emphasizes teaching the techniques often seen in high-level competitive matches. These include attacks from longer distance and aggressive bladework. While there is no substitute for solid grounding in the fundamentals, timing and control, coaches often find that students need work on specific issues like these. This topic will cover instruction in both offense and defense for all three weapons.

* Recent USFA Rule Changes & Interpretations:
---------------------------------------
A discussion and demonstration of recent changes to the game, including the current interpretation of rules by rated officials.
