I wasn't there, so I can't comment on it directly, but I wouldn't say it was such a big jump for Elkan, who was a C going in. I've never seen him, but he did take out Drew Ridge and Dan Richards, neither of whom is a pushover.

Joel Fink's D->B is a bigger jump, but I haven't seen him enough to know whether one should say "About time!" or "You're kidding!" I'd think you'd know better than I would.

Ok, now I'm really depressed... I was sooo close to showing up, but it was just a liiiittle too early in my rampup to go fencing... Drat!!!

Great job Joe!!! To be honest, I was kinda expecting something like this, when I saw the prereg list... (No slight intended to anyone present, of course, just having seen Joe fence, and knowing most if not all of the serious players...)

Don't know who Elkan is, so I can't speak to his skill. But it seems that taking out both Drew and Dan, that would speak for itself (unless both were having serious off-days...).

Joel has always been, IMHO a bit underrated as a D. I haven't fenced him lately though, so I don't know just how far he's progressed. Still, can't say I'm surprised. However, since his DE path seems a bit 'light', he'll have to prove that B in future tournaments.

Yeah, I was interested that both fencers' ratings were from 05. Really, I have seen Joel fence, but it's epee... I can see that Graham's a decent fencer, but otherwise I have a hard time judging if epeeists are good or not. Bounce, bounce, poke bounce, poke, bounce BAM!!! I'm a much better judge of ROW fencers.

I'm told that Elkan is a former B who is getting back into fencing after a hiatus that let his rating degrade.
