| Gear I have been fencing for a few months now, I'm going to start needing my own gear. I was just wondering where is the best place for everything? I know I need a jacket, mask and underarm protecter first and i have no idea how to size masks.

| I would recommend Absolute Fencing Gear, I've been very happy with them personally, I order all of my clubs gear from them, and my coach can't stop mentioning how good and inexpensive their stuff is.
Mask sizes, most people of adult size are Medium. Don't get worried if it doesent fit quite right, you can squeeze them & bend them into shape to fit snugly.
Here's Absolute's sizing chart http://www.absolutefencinggear.com/Sizing.pdf
You'll want this mask because you can use it for competitions, and it's only $9 more than their cheap mask.
Mask: $54 http://www.absolutefencinggear.com/s...60631d62b74dff
Plastron/Under Arm Protector: $17 http://www.absolutefencinggear.com/s...60631d62b74dff
I presume your a boy, but if not, get the girls version of this jacket.
Jacket: $52 http://www.absolutefencinggear.com/s...60631d62b74dff
You should probably ask your coach & see what company he recommends.
Also, before you buy your first weapon, DEFINITELY ask your coach.
Hope this helps.

| some kind of weapon would come in handy too, otherwise you might find yourself losing a little bit too often.
as for sizing masks, the question is: does it fit on your head without falling off?
you should be able to fence without it rattling around, not too tight that you can't breath and be able to do a fast lunge without it flying off your head. |

| To add to the informational deluge:
If you wear glasses, I highly recommend getting a Leon Paul mask and adding the $10.00 Contour Fit System. (But bear in mind your base cost for tha mask will be higher, so you will pay more).
I love mine.

Most of my gear (which I bought almost a year ago) came from them and has held up quite well, especially considering that I can be very hard on equipment.

But set the velcro, then use safety pins to pin the straps in place. The velcro will last longer.

| I second (or third, or whatever) the recommendation of Absolute; I get all my stuff there at NACs, and they fix it for me there, too.
I disagree about the glasses thing-- just forget glasses and fencing. Even if the mask doesn't plaster them to your face, causing your eyelashes to grease them up and prevent you from seeing, they'll fog up like crazy and prevent you from seeing. Switch to contacts for fencing, glasses for whenever else. |
