I am not certain of the exact rules, but generally a couple of people are picked from the top four/eight. However, they can test a person at any time if they feel it is warrented.

I am sure someone here knows the rules on this better than I. If you go to the US Anti-Doping site you can learn more http://www.usantidoping.org . They have the list of what is acceptable and what isn't. They also have the form you have to file if the fencer is taking certain drugs like albuterol.

    Hope that helps.

Anyone in the top 32 (anyone who gets national team points) can be drug tested. I believe that the winner (I think second place) and one other top 4 finisher are chosen at random. I believe the drug testing of the top 4 are to simulate the criteria for World Championships where it is 1st, 2nd and one of the 3rds.

You'd need to already have filed a TUE or ATUE at this point.

There are, in fact, completely valid circumstances in which a fencer would be worried.

For example, if I thought it likely that I would be drug tested at a national event, I couldn't take the medication I'm supposed to take every morning for at least a week preceding the national event. This isn't medication I could possibly get an exemption for, either. And while I'm in college, it's not actually absolutely necessary I take it every day, but it is likely I will need it at least once in the week, and will suffer if I don't take it.

Of course, it's unlikely I'll be drug tested ever, so I don't worry too much.

    You never know...

You never know what will happen. At the Montreal Jr World Cup my kid had a cold and was going to take some cold remedies so she could sleep the night before -just as a joke we went on line and checked to make sure they weren't on the banned list never expecting she would be tested. Wouldn't you know it - she comes in 3rd and is selected for testing!

It's a good point, you have to be careful even with the over the counter remedies.

Of course, based on MP's post above, it sounds like she's on prescribed medication on the banned (rather than merely the restricted) list. Basic options are to not take it and suffer accordingly (ideally by taking a non-banned replacement, although that's not always possible), or take the medication, breaking the rules, and risking the consequences in the unlikely case of being tested.

MP has selected option 2, at least until such a point as she believes it's likely she might be in the pool of people from which the testees are drawn.

Google adwords. In a thread that's discussing medication and the taking of medication to help allow someone to sleep? Yeah, I'd say it wasn't coincidental.

Yes, banned, no non-banned replacement that works, and I haven't actually been at a tournament where drug testing is a possibility. So I'm currently pretty low risk. : )
