Array Robby Carillo Some of you may know Robby Carrillo, a (very good) national referee from Los Angeles. Several days ago Robby was involved in a very serious motorcycle accident. Below are some details from Bill Oliver:
Hello everyone,
This is an official Robby Carrillo update.
For those of you who don't know Robby was involved in a serious motorcycle accident that has left him at the ICU at UCLA medical center in a drug induced coma, with bleeding on the brain, a severely broken leg and a crushed chest cavity which is not allowing his lungs to expand.
Robby is awake!!
They brought him out of the coma this morning and he is responsive. He recognizes his family, answers questions, moves his arms and leg (the other is immobilized) and has smiled.
He is still in ICU and will be for the foreseeable future so there is no visitation.
His leg is doing pretty well and the operation went well, so it looks like he will keep it.
The bleeding in his brain was minimal and appears to have stopped, as did the swelling.
His chest is still the main concern and its condition is keeping him in ICU. He is still on a ventilator, this morning they lowered it from the maximum setting of 16 to 14; so that is better but you can tell he has a lot of settings to go before he is breathing on his own.
The family asks that we all accept this as the facts of his case and stop all rumor (almost impossible in the fencing community but let's try). They also ask that we think positively and pray for a full and speedy recovery.
Some of you have asked and the family is looking at setting up an account for Robby but, understandably, that has not been first in their mind so it will be next week before they have any concrete thoughts.
If you are in fencing and have any questions, feel free to call or email me. I will be in France this weekend but I will check my email and have my phone on.
That is all the news that is fit to print. Please forward this to anyone who asks about Robby. If you are attempting to repeat this verbally try to get as many of the facts correct as possible so we can cut down on the rumors.
DC

Bill Oliver

Array If you're a local, or plan on flying in for a visit in the near future, contact/PM/call/etc, there is an address and phone number of the hospital is available (not sure if that info oughta be posted in a public forum yet). Ask the local contacts such as Gary Zeiss, Derek Cotton (in Paris this weekend so out of touch), Kelly, etc or PM some referees (most of us probably got the info by now).
Balloons and cards are great, but no flowers in ICU. Very limited visiting conditions (hours & numbers). When you have three Romulan Warbirds blocking the escape route, Worf has an emotional breakdown about his childhood toy, Riker announces he's gay, Data's positronic brain gets a virus, and Geordi quits because he's had just one too many imminent warp core breach.... Just sit back, breathe, and follow these simple steps: -

Array Man, that's too bad. I hope he gets better soon---and then buys a car...not for nothing do emergency room workers refer to motorcycles as "Donor-mobiles". Use the Shift key, people! Keyboard manufacturers everywhere are ineffably saddened when you ignore what they made just for you! -

Array Thank god he's on the road to recovery. I heard when he had the accident, and I've been worried about him since. "If I were ever to challenge you to a duel, your best bet would be battle axes in a very dark basement." Misquoted from The Prisoner

He does have a comfy Jeep Cherokee for long trips, cargo hauling, giving rides to a hitchiking referee lost in the wrong side of the continent, etc. But when the weather's fantastic and the road's waiting.... Array He was just up here a couple of weeks ago to ref the Battle in Seattle. Robby's a wonderful guy and a great ref. We're all wishing him the best and keeping him in our prayers! -

Array Update by way of Gary Zeiss:
Robbie is out of ICU!
Went by UCLA tonight - he's quite banged up and on pretty heavy
painkillers, but no longer an ICU patient. Probably there for a couple
of more weeks, though. But he still has two legs and two feet!

Allen Evans Here you go, the more the better!
There was a giant card at the Linkmeyer tournament in LA this weekend that the fencers signed. The organizers had a great photo of Robby wearing a set of devil horns, it made me smile very time I looked at it.
The address is:
UCLA Medical Center
10833 Laconte Avenue
Los Angeles, CA 90095

Array Update from Robby's Sister Robby is doing progressively better. He is out of ICU, his leg is healing well, still some fluid on one lung, but progressing, he breathing on own, and no neurological concerns.
Some small fractures found in lower back, which time and normal treatment should take care of.
as far as life threatening injuries, I don't know if I can say totally out of the woods, but he is looking really good, showing some signs recovering strength and the humor we all know and love.
Continue sending prayers and positive thoughts.
