Thumb to bell: rule question This is pretty much a ridiculous detail, but whatever.
Today I was holding the only epee I have with a large grip, and realized that I was very close to not passing the two centimeter rule.
But I remembered that I had gotten the large grip because I had gotten a new, slightly bulkier glove that required more room. With the glove on, I'm in no danger of failing the test.
So is the test supposed to be performed with the glove on or off? It might only be a half centimeter difference or so, but that's 25% of the minimum distance.
On the one hand, I'd always imagined teh test being performed in the same manner as the fencer was fencing; with the glove on. But then, a fencer could wear a huge glove and have a ridiculous grip.
So what's the actual test? -

Array Go ahead and wear a ridiculously large glove. Good luck protecting the hand from being hit in epee and good luck in successfully manipulating the weapon to hit the opponent. -

It's the same as pommeling. -

So what's the actual test? I have never actually seen anyone do a test. If it didn't look wierd no one will care very much.
The rule is undoubtedly based on other people doing ridiculous things. So, don't do ridiculous things. Whoopee! My avatar is back. -
For what it's worth, if I were to perform the test I would use the distance from the outside of the glove when pressed against the tip of your thumb, ie the only advantage you'd get from a thicker glove would be the thickness of the material (and any accompaning folds or such), rather than letting you have a cm of empty finger of the glove sticking out there. -

Array I wouldnt worry about it. By the way why is your glove so much bigger? Is it just thicker? If it is too big then I would ge a smaller grip, but apart form that you should be fine. -

Array I happen to agree with KD5MDK, but if I were you, I would not worry too much. Overall, very few refs do the thumb to bell check. Proditio plerumque amatur, proditor odio habetur.

Array Reading this thread I can't help but laugh thinking of someone bringing in an absurdly long orthopedic grip while wearing a glove with an absurdly long thumb and going en garde. Would be a very humurous situation, although maybe not for the referee. People don't dance no more (what!?),
They just stand there like this (that's right!),
They cross their arms and stare you down and drink and moan and dis (OK now!). -
