Array Ads I'm getting Google ads in some posts, even though I'm logged in. The majoprity of them are in Inqs posts, but I've noticed them in a couple of other members posts, too. Any thoughts as to why? Apart from the obvious about Inq being Beelzebub.... The Stalwart Panda
I'm not grumpy - I suffer from stupidity rage -
so since I typed a mystery keyword in the venery game do I get prize? -

Array Me too.
They're really annoying. The preceding post brought to you by Rabid Monk (TM). Rabid Monk: informative, irreverent, interesting, random and downright odd posts, done with pride since 1983. -

Array I saw them too, but for me the pattern was that they appeared in the last post of the thread I was looking at.
I find them somewhat annoying too, but then again, if it's something Craig has decided we have to put up with to keep this free site up and running, I suppose I can deal with it...
(But yeah, I'd rather not have them.) -

Array Yup I just saw one while logged in. It was in the last post of the Word Association thread (goldgar's post). I guess if its neccesary its fine but it is kind of annoying. -

Array That's weird, I hadn't noticed them before, but they're appearing in the last post in each thread. -

Array I'm testing some ads in the non-fencing forums (Water Cooler, Games and Politics)
They are set to show up next to the first post and the last post. I'll be setting them up so GoGreen members don't see them at all on any board.

Craig
Ads in WaterCooler and subforums no longer appear for Green members.

Array The way the ads are formatted is making it a little difficult to read some posts, such as ones with quotations. Ich steige ab, Hab keine Zeit, Muss jetzt zu den anderen Pferden, Wollen auch geritten werden

Array Is that "testing" as in "seeing how much revenue they bring in", or as in "testing the patience of the audience"? Use the Shift key, people! Keyboard manufacturers everywhere are ineffably saddened when you ignore what they made just for you! -

Hosting for www.fencing.net has increase by 10x now that we're on a dedicated server. That does not include software licensing fees or custom coding that I'm paying for some of the other features for the site and for future features that may be requested.
I don't get a yearly fee from 25,000 members to subsidize this site, so the money has to come from somewhere.
If anyone has other suggestions, please PM me - I'm more than open to other ideas.

Array In regard to which, see my post in the "Going Green" thread. Is there another way to do it than online?
I don't so much mind the ads at the bottom of the thread. The ones mid-thread are slightly more obtrusive, but also tolerable. What I didn't like at all was when they were appearing in people's posts yesterday... Use the Shift key, people! Keyboard manufacturers everywhere are ineffably saddened when you ignore what they made just for you! -

Array Inq,
I responded to you in that thread.

Array I dont mind the ads either. Perhaps if they could appear on the side of the window rather than at the side of peoples posts, it might not make it as jarring to the eye. Also, the ad could scroll with the window, rather than remaining fixed to one or two posts. Ich steige ab, Hab keine Zeit, Muss jetzt zu den anderen Pferden, Wollen auch geritten werden

Array Okay.
After learning the reasoning behind these ads, I've given them the benefit of the doubt, and held back from making any comments (aside from the one posted above from before I knew the reason).
But that ends now.
These ads are really starting to piss me off.
If fencing.net required funds to keep in operation, a simple PM or a thread detailing the issue would have sufficed, and I would have gladly donated the small amount required to be green. Very simple, personal, and polite.
However, spamming the topic threads with ads for Google, etc. and having these ads inserted into the thread itself is not cool. If fencing.net wanted my money, that would be the absolute wrong way to go about getting it.
It is intrusive, obstructive, and disruptive. It comes across as being cold, impersonal, and rude. I, for one, do not dome to fencing.net to be bombarded by advertisements. If I wanted spam, I would contact one of those pathetic individuals who make their living spamming message boards. At least they don't muck up every single thread.
I do not like this intrusion, and until the ads are removed, I will not be donating any moneys to fencing.net. I refuse to have what should be an entirely voluntary choice forced upon me in such a manner.
Just my thoughts.

Honestly, go green now, and you don't have to deal with them.
My opinion:

Array I just use the adblock plus plugin for firefox, haven't seen an add since. Although there is still a bar there, just no add. -

The voluntary part is whether one participates in this community, everything else is up to the website owner's discretion/needs. This site is a service provided Free of Charge and you may not be familar with one of life's enduring truisms but TANSTAAFL...
Please go find something more important to kvetch about... war, taxes, tuition, medical expenses, Anna Nicole... -

Except I really don't know anyone who actually enjoys advertising; I don't think there is any reason why we should strive to ruin one of the only places where we aren't bombarded by commercials. The final say is always up to the owner, but what is the point of maintaining a site if 1.) Nobody likes it, and subsequently 2.) Nobody reads it? I'm sure there is a better way to raise funds for the site than blatant advertising right in the middle of the thread.
Unless, of course, you are convinced that it is the only way to support the site.
