Thompson over Abend in the final, with a score of 0-0? What's the story there?

And withdrew? Bummer. Does Soren still collect the bounty?

No, Soren did not win the bounty because he did not defeat Alex. It was announced that the bounty now doubles. The next Mercury Cup is March 18.

Cool! I think that bounty is a really clever idea.

That is correct. According to the rules, you must actually knock him out via fencing. Jacob Wischnia ALMOST did it... losing 13-12 in overtime. Luckily for the rest of us, Alex prevailed and the bounty increases! The next Mercury Cup event, on March 18th, will feature a $100 bounty for knocking out Alex. Pre-Register here: http://askfred.net/Events/moreInfo.p...nament_id=2576

The full rules of the bounty prize are below are below:

Fancy yourself an underdog? Do you think you have what it takes to take down the big man? Well then this offer is for you!

Alex Abend has been terrorizing fencers everywhere... The reigning 2006 Mercury Cup Champion, Alex has won both of this season's first two Mercury Cup events. And, through what was no doubt the result of the excellent training he received through competing in such excellent world-renown MC events, he went on to win the first North American Cup.

    This terror must stop!

A bounty is being offered to the first fencer who can knock Alex out of a Mercury Cup event. The bounty will start at $50, and will increase by $50 at each event until he is beaten. If we are collectively so pathetic that we are unable to beat him over the remainder of the season, Alex will be entitled to collect the bounty himself.

    Rules

This bounty will go to the first fencer to beat Alex Abend in a 15-touch direct elimination bout in a Mercury Cup event during the remainder of the 2006-2007 season. You must actually beat Alex by fencing - blackcards, injury withdrawls, and other such occurances do not qualify. The bounty starts at $50 at the next Mercury Cup event Alex competes in, and will increase by $50 at each subsequent event Alex competes in until somebody beats him. Failure to draw Alex in a tableau is tough cookies. This is a one-time offer. Anybody using questionable fencing methods (e.g. overly aggressive) will be disqualified. Michael Aufrichtig and Jonathan Bartlett are the official judges, and reserve the right to disqualify anybody at anytime for any reason (Michael Elfassy, this means you). Beautiful women 18+ please see me privately. Alex Abend has pre-approved this offer. The award will be in the form of a gift certificate or credit to the fencing equipment supplier of your choice. NCAA and other small school children, you are responsible for knowing and adhering to whatever crappy gift-acceptance rules you are required to follow.

Anybody who beats Alex by so many points that he cries gets an extra bonus!!!

    As Always,
    Jonathan Bartlett

Lucky for Jake as well. Having the prize be in the form of a gift certificate does NOT make it legal for NCAA purposes.

Despite a number of tournament organizers apparently thinking so. I think this set of rules does the best job I've seen so far of not guaranteeing anything to the NCAA (or potential NCAA) athlete. Plus bonus points for humorous tone.

Argh! I was supposed to join the tourney but I didn't preregister, not to mention I had no ride... and a bunch of other factors.

    Oh well.
No one cares how long your epee is, and if it breaks you just get a new one.
