Array I don't want to find my next lover. I don't want help from H&R Block. I just want to hear occassionally helpful, sometimes rude, always obsessive comments about fencing. When/Why did this change to the forum happen?

Array Actually, in the last couple of weeks it seems the ads have been reduced. As I understand, with the change to a dedicated server, the spam filters needed to be tweaked. To me it seems to be working, but I also do my own taxes... -

if you don't want to see the google ads, log in. is that simple. -

Array Believe it or not, there are people who get paid to spam forums.
I'm on one that currently has a serious problem with these individuals.
There are also programs that do it (bots), but now sites make you have to enter that code that nobody can read. So companies call in the lifeless wonders to spread the spam.
As for why, well, you'd have to ask them.
At any rate, I haven't noticed it here, so the moderators/admin must be doing an exceptional job. The preceding post brought to you by Rabid Monk (TM). Rabid Monk: informative, irreverent, interesting, random and downright odd posts, done with pride since 1983. -

for example, right now:
Currently Active Users: 450 (38 members and 412 guests)
if all of you unregistered guests want to not see the ads, register and contribute -

Array Ads for Guests only There are Google AdSense ads on the forum that are viewable to guests but not to registered members. Chefencer is correct in that they don't bring in a lot of money (though they've only been running since Friday) but it is a good incentive to at least get people to register.
If people don't register the advertising money goes to pay for the dedicated server hosting and for improvements (graphic design, server software licenses, etc.) to the www site.

What I pointed out was that registering (and thereby blocking out the new ads) does not oblige one to contribute (post), as mentioned by Noodle. Posting (part of Noodle's suggestion) is not required in order to avoid the ads.

*wonders if convincing Craig to throw a link up to a page with the ads enabled, in order to allow registered users (conveniently) periodically to go there and bump up clickthru counts constitutes click fraud* "Oh but you can't expect to wield supreme executive power just because some watery tart threw a sword at you!" -

CPM advertising is just view based, so clicks wouldn't matter. google ads are partially CPM based, but the money is in the clicks. (i'd personally not use google ads for a forum) -

As far as the ads page - It would be clickfraud if I were to encourage the clicking of the ads with any kind of message asking for clicks. -

Fencers tend to be a smart lot. And the ones here clearly tend to have too much free time on their hands anyway. Certainly I wouldn't want to be thought to be suggesting that you encourage fraudulant behavior. :)

I've never let minimal data interfere with any of my assertions! I've got to say, Mr. O, I admire your mastery of the oblique diss... *tips hat, fingers sore spot on chops where busted* -
