I don't want to find my next lover. I don't want help from H&R Block. I just want to hear occassionally helpful, sometimes rude, always obsessive comments about fencing. When/Why did this change to the forum happen?

Actually, in the last couple of weeks it seems the ads have been reduced. As I understand, with the change to a dedicated server, the spam filters needed to be tweaked. To me it seems to be working, but I also do my own taxes...

actually, you probably haven't noticed because most people never log out, but if you're not logged in, you see google ads in the posts.

if you don't want to see the google ads, log in. is that simple.

Believe it or not, there are people who get paid to spam forums.
I'm on one that currently has a serious problem with these individuals.
There are also programs that do it (bots), but now sites make you have to enter that code that nobody can read. So companies call in the lifeless wonders to spread the spam.

As for why, well, you'd have to ask them.

At any rate, I haven't noticed it here, so the moderators/admin must be doing an exceptional job.
The preceding post brought to you by Rabid Monk (TM).

Haha! I had no idea, as I never log off. That's an interesting incentive to become a member = those ads can't be bringing in big money, but it 'pays' to be logged in...

yeah. if you ever take a look at the statistics, there's typically 5 unregistered viewers on the board to 1 registered viewer on the board at any given time.

    for example, right now:
Currently Active Users: 450 (38 members and 412 guests)

if all of you unregistered guests want to not see the ads, register and contribute

Or register and DON'T contribute -- still eliminates the ads. :P

    Ads for Guests only

There are Google AdSense ads on the forum that are viewable to guests but not to registered members. Chefencer is correct in that they don't bring in a lot of money (though they've only been running since Friday) but it is a good incentive to at least get people to register.

If people don't register the advertising money goes to pay for the dedicated server hosting and for improvements (graphic design, server software licenses, etc.) to the www site.

Not sure I said that. While it doesn't surprise me that they don't involve backing up the armored truck, I have minimal data on which to base that belief and wouldn't have put it forward as an assertion.

What I pointed out was that registering (and thereby blocking out the new ads) does not oblige one to contribute (post), as mentioned by Noodle. Posting (part of Noodle's suggestion) is not required in order to avoid the ads.

*wonders if convincing Craig to throw a link up to a page with the ads enabled, in order to allow registered users (conveniently) periodically to go there and bump up clickthru counts constitutes click fraud*

yes, it does, for CPC advertising. CPM advertising is just view based, so clicks wouldn't matter. google ads are partially CPM based, but the money is in the clicks. (i'd personally not use google ads for a forum)

Corrected the attribute in my post.

As far as the ads page - It would be clickfraud if I were to encourage the clicking of the ads with any kind of message asking for clicks.

Oh, I'm not sure any such message would be necessary. Fencers tend to be a smart lot. And the ones here clearly tend to have too much free time on their hands anyway. Certainly I wouldn't want to be thought to be suggesting that you encourage fraudulant behavior. :)

Haha! I've never let minimal data interfere with any of my assertions! I've got to say, Mr. O, I admire your mastery of the oblique diss... *tips hat, fingers sore spot on chops where busted*

If you actually look at the list of active users, it's mostly search engine bots, the vast majority of which is Yahoo. If I were to guess, the ratio of unregistered to registered viewers is actually far closer to 1, if not under.

mm, it is right now, but i've definitely seen instances where it was mostly guests
