That is a great result for Adam. Last I heard, he was still without any consistent coaching - a phenomenally talented and hardworking guy.

I'd like to add that we (I helped run the weapons control) thought he behaved very nicely and polite too. And it was a great final bout. Congrats, Adam!

He does, in fact. A wonderful young man -- dedicated, talented and so deserving of this victory.

I think that was 3rd place. I know the belgian kid De Mets got a sewing machine. He looked a little surprised...

The prizes were on the table, and the first place winner got first choice. Adam chose the printer. He could have chosen the sewing machine, but he didn't.

It is indeed. I take this to mean that he has now declared who he wants to fence for (USA)... he is a citizen of both countries.

Since you need to have an FIE card to fence internationally (except perhaps in Canada) and the national federation is involved to get one, I believe you are correct.

A US citizen can fence in the US Summer Nationals. If they are also a Canadian citizen they can fence in the Canadian Nationals. If they wish to fence in a country for which they are not a citizen then they must claim country affiliation when applying for an FIE licence.

Adam fenced for the US for the first time in the Montreal World Cup in January. Since he has now fenced for the US, he will not be able to fence internationally for Canada. If he had fenced internationally for Canada prior to the Montreal World Cup, he would not have been able to represent the US.

There are other fencers who have US and Canadian citizenship who fence for Canada but live in the US. When they fence in North American Cups they do so with a US club affiliation and when they fence in Canada they use a Canadian club affiliation.

Complete details and further information is in the Athletes Handbook.

Is it a Canadian "thing" that keeps him listed on their Domestic points standings while the the others who decided to fence as Canadians are no longer listed on the U.S. point standings as he is?

Are there any others who have elected to fence as Americans? That seems to be the analogous situation.

This statement is misleading. The following is from the Athlete Handbook:

    ***************
2.7.1. Eligibility to Compete in a Qualifier

Fencers must be U.S. citizens OR permanent residents of the United States and current competitive members of the USFA. Any fencer who is a citizen or permanent resident who has represented another country in the last three years and who has not yet been granted permission to represent the USA is not eligible for any USFA National Championship competition, individual or team, including Division and Section qualifying competitions. A foreign fencer who is in the US on a visa is NOT eligible to fence in any National Championships, individual or team, or associated Division or Section qualifying competitions.

In addition to citizenship requirements, fencers must meet the age and classification requirements of the USFA Championship at the time of the qualifier in order to compete in that qualifier.
    ************************

From this, not every U.S. citizen can fence in the Summer Nationals, which are Championships Events. Fencers who have represented other countries within 3 years cannot unless they have been granted permission to represent the USA.
