Array Recent International tourny i heard in the recent World's tourny in Germany in Berlin (i think) that in Junior Men's foil they had to do 4 rounds of pools. Did anyone else hear this? if it is true, any idea why they'd do that? -
That was actually not a world cup; it was a German Cadet international tournament in Koblenz, something like a giant one-event NAC. There was a thread on it last week, in which you can find links to results and discussion; it had Koblenz and Bonn in the title, I think. Also, not only did they have 4 rounds of pools, they also had repechage from 64 to 32 and then repechage from 32 to 8. Two-day marathon fencing. -

Array I think all German national tournaments are like that. - Epee is the Louis Vuitton bag of fencing: only the best can get it, and the rest of the masses must content themselves with cheap knockoffs (sabre, foil)
- To not recognize the power of the French grip is to be in denial
-
Question for the forum at large: do you think German strength at the highest level of competition owes something to these giant marathons? -

Array Certainly, making it out of one of these means you have pretty good stamina.
However, there are tons of other parameters that need to be taken into account. Certainly, the German teaching methods are also quite important, and they have been copied by many different other countries. I am sure there are other things to come into play, than just these tournaments and their format. - Epee is the Louis Vuitton bag of fencing: only the best can get it, and the rest of the masses must content themselves with cheap knockoffs (sabre, foil)

Array I'd imagine that our multiweapon, multievent competitions are too large to allow for marathon fencing of that type. Though it would be nice if we could have smaller, single weapon competitions which could then be run marathon-style. -

The largest women only event in Sweden is a one-day WE that is fenced as a giant poule, 32 fencers. The largest mens event is a two-day ME with contains first pouls of 6, the pouls of 36, then 90% promoted to 15-point DE, with repechage from every level. ZZ can tell you more on the WE event, she is member of the organizing club.
Have a nice time!

Then again, those were senior events. Haven't seen any age group tourneys yet. -

Array That sounds like a lot of fun, I wish they had events like that I could go to. -

Is MikeHarm a cadet? Fechter1 strongly implies the senior events have a different format. -

Don't know if the size of the tournament had anything to do with this... How big was the Cadet tournament that the OP was looking at? -

The "That" in MikeHarm's post is sufficiently non-specific that he could easily have been refering to the tournament 10 posts earlier.
For that matter, talk to your local division. Get them to run an all-pools tournament. Voila, tons of fencing. Certainly I've been in tournaments with 4 rounds of pools. Not with 275 fencers, and with no DE's (or repechage) after those 4 rounds, granted.
