Running Teams on Fencing Time

I had a problem this weekend running a team event in fencing time. I couldn't get the team with the highest point calc to the first spot. The program wanted to put them in second place.

It could have been an end loser issue, but I tried several different methods and it wouldn't re-seed. I ended up doing it by hand.

Any suggestions?

Fencing Time's default method of seeding teams is to use an "average" rating of the team members. If you want to use use points, you can tell it to seed using points only, and assign each team a point value. You can also always override Fencing Time's seeding by checking the "Allow unrestricted manual seeding" option. (This all assumes you are using FT version 2.0.)

Or were you using one of those features and it still wasn't cooperating?

I will check on the settings tonight, but I believe I was running it on the ratings setting. The two teams both had one B and two C's, but one of the teams year for the B was older than the other.

So, does FT take into consideration the year also?

That might explain it - FT doesn't adjust the values based on the rating year, it's strictly by average "letters". Also, I believe it will randomize teams of equal average rating when seeding.

Interesting. I was taught that the rating and the year factored into the total score. I will have to research it.

When I originally wrote the team seeding, I did not find any references to how to seed teams beyond the use of the cumulative individual results of the fencers in prior events. I created the "average rating" approach as a basic seeding method for local tournaments where there usually isn't a prior event to use for seeding.

Last year I discussed this method with someone who frequently works on the bout committe for national events (I can't recall her name, unfortunately!) She told me that the average rating approach is a valid thing to do, although the rating of the alternate fencer shoudln't be factored into the calculation. FT DOES use the rating of the alternate (if present) in the calculation. I have since fixed this in the (yet-to-be-released) next version of FT.

If you find a reference to using the rating year as part of the seeding process for teams, please let me know - I can always update the code to take that into account.

Thanks,
Dan

It is good to know about the alternate problem. Thanks.
