Do you have idiots at your club?

There are a lot of really stupid people at my club. Not only are the ignorant, but they are just a few pins short of a strike. Most of the people at my club are very bright and cultured, but people like saberdude, and a few others are really dumb. Is this a problem at your club?

We have a couple of teen agers who think they're Darth Vader & Luke Skywalker (you don't want to know how many times I've said, "Don't fence without masks on, boys!"), but other than that, it's a pretty good club with good people.

And I'm not just saying that because I'm the president. ;0) I'm very proud of my gang.

Hey Moonitic,

As for Darth and Luke, next time try "Thank you very much for coming, but since you can't seem to follow basic safety rules, please don't come back." If not, the ensuing lawsuit could get ugly if they happen to do one another serious damage. And it would be a lot more expensive than the loss membership income from these two.

IMHO

We've got one guy who thinks he's pretty hot stuff and is constantly making obnoxious, borderline sexist remarks to the women (Moonitic, you probably know who I mean). My personal favorites have been his comments on my weight loss - "I don't know if you're losing weight but it looks like its shifting well" (shifting?????) and commenting that one of the women fencers should wear her jacket during a lessonn because "women have sensitive parts". The funny thing is, I think he really is trying to be complimentary and/or chivalrous when he makes these comments - I pretty much just do my best to ignore him, but I know he's ticked alot of people off.

oh boy...I know EXACTLY who you mean. He's one of those "let's take my clothes off in front of everyone after fencing" people, isn't he? I try to avoid him as much as possible. Not fun when he follows me. UGH!

Mergs, since most of the time it happens in the advanced or beginning class, & not in the club, I'm out of my terms. I have spoken to the coaches, & when I see them at it again, the coaches have to take care of it.

Idiots at my club Oh yeah. A [prime example: I teach the foilists by running them through footwork and drills. For a while we had one fellow ( a sabrist, I think ) who insisted on doing things his way and ignorig my corrections. He'd shrug off my suggestions with a "bad habit" comment, but it's pretty clear when a person's ignoring what's being taught. Idiot! If you're not going to participate, DON'T WASTE THE INSTRUCTOR'S TIME!!!

that wasnt me was it?
naa i never particapated in the class so it must not have been me. all I've done is watch or fence a little foil, but i never took part in class, oh richard (thin richard) is going to start in the foil intro this month! he has fenced saber for 2 years and wants to start foil, wich is good because he has natural foil position.

Moonitic-

You got it!!!

By the way, are you planning on fencing at the tourney this Saturday? I may actually make it out this time. Pam, Lisa, Z and I will be representing the RFC in sabre - any idea what other saberists will be there? I would like to be able to try foil as well, but as it is I will already be late for work - D***n retail hours!!!

clean touch: i would take it easy. i wish all teachers, coaches and helpful friends of salles, would take a few classes in education, and learn what the cognitive process is, and how to teach. let's hear from arcon, the psychologist, who will elaborate further on this. for now, i will offer the following: people in a learning process, will absorb new information at a certain rate and internalize it later on. with practice the new information becomes part of your new cognitive processing and reflexes are established. fencing is very demanding of those processess, as the fencer is continuously learning how to change the "bad habits" and lay down new neural pathways - OVERCORRECTING your students is a mistake and will inhibit their learning processes. you should leave them alone and let them absorb at whatever rate they can, once you see for certain that your students knows something, move onto the next step. if you need to: WRITE LESSON PLANS. Have you ever played a simultaneous chess match? it will give you a rough idea of the processing done in a round robin.
[more later]

Right now, asking me about this frickin' Saturday is like waving a red cape in front of a bull (I'm Taurus too, go fig!). I'm a TAD put off by the whole thing (president of the club & I didn't know this event was occuring!) I'll be there to help run the YOUTH event. Screw the D & Under. This has been planned for quite some time (uh..November?) & everyone is going to be fencing. Someone needs to help Doug RUN the dang thing! The new directors will be doing their practicals during the youth event. And that event starts when foil would start anyway. Can you tell Buffy is in Slayer mindset?? Maybe I should fence just so I could beat the crap out of someone!

Ok...sorry about that guys...I'm having a bad time with sinuses, as well as other body parts ::ahem::...plus some other personal news. It's been a BAD couple of weeks!

The last post from me was actually from my evil twin...

I did fence today (Saturday) at the D & Under. First tourney in 3 months. I came in 5th out of 11...better than I thought I'd do. I even got compliments from my coach (that's a rare & unusual thing).

Needless to say, I'm no longer homocidal. Nothing like a good fencing bout to tame the savage beast, huh?

Everyone gets an idiot in their club once in a while. Fortunately, they tend to weed themselves out.

We had one freak old lady a few years ago at SwordPlay. She got a hate on against the girlfriend of Freewind. And if you've ever met Freewind, you know how intimidating her looks with those facial (and other) tattoos. Before she was kicked out, this lady basically accused all the guys of molesting her (come on...NO one's THAT desperate. Ugh!) and of orgy's beign held in the salle.

She was asked to leave the salle and went to a rival one about a mile away...and she lasted about a month there before being asked to leave for the same reason. I think she was kicked out of a couple of other clubs before -- thankfully -- fading from sight.

Glad she's gone. There are enough amateur loonies in our sport...no need to bring in a pro.

(extra points to anyone who can name the book that last line was derived from)

Yeah...when we were at Sectionals in Vegas a couple of years back, we had to walk thorugh the casino to get to the venue in the Venitian. If there were ANY security cameras that were't folliwing Freewind, they were probably aimed down Angela's blouse
