OK so it's an enjoyable movie (it gives me a laugh) but come on it's hardly Citizen Kane. Eric Roberts shoes alone are reason for his subsequent demise as a grade A star!

Interestingly, I read that this sort of story (man finds teacher, helps teacher, becomes great) is quite a common story. However I remember reading that in the past at some salles (France in particular - I think) you could be taught as a payment for services you provided for the fencing master(e.g janitorial work). This applied if the master thought you had talent but couldn't pay his fees.

Can't remember the source of the story, just that I was surprised that there was element of truth to By the Sword. Anyone out there know more?

    7. Overly fake stunts
    6. Eric Roberts
    5. Boring
    4. One-dimensional characters

My Top-10 Reasons Why there isn't more Fencing in the Movies

    10. Reviews like the above

    9. Many worthy movies get bad reviews

    8. Does fencing really loose with 'license', i.e. Foil Fencing with Epee; it's a hook.

    7. Stunts are fake by definition; Bob Anderson didn't do too bad considering. It could have been worse.

    6. Better Eric Roberts than Paul Rubens. On second thought...

    5. Eric Robert's 'character' ego was about to the level you might expect in a world class fencer.

    4. Fencing in the US could use more, not less Hollywood 'spin'

    3. Most fencer's would love to be an extra; even if they stunk too

    2. Too bad there aren't many real writers who are fencers, otherwise there would be more modern fencing content in the movies

    1. Lumberg hasn't finished his screenplay yet.

I gotta go with Lumberg's review on this one. Where did Eric Roberts go so wrong?

    However,

To each his or her own.
