Array Cherry Blossom Open 2007 This years Cherry Blossom open is only a couple months away and it's shaping up nicely. The prizes will be awesome again with gift certificates and origional artwork.
The referee cadre is already pretty awesome (no self reffing, we promise!). You can see a partial list of who we have on the more info page
Absolute will be the vendor and they're brining us at least one grounded strip this year.
Still a couple free A spots left for the men (not in epee and foil). All the free spots are still open for the women (last year women's foil was an A event and Epee had the potential to be, so sign up )
for more info: http://askfred.net/Events/moreInfo.p...nament_id=2783
to see who else will be there: http://askfred.net/Events/whoIsComin...nament_id=2783
Hope to see you all there, feel free to PM me with any questions -

Array Is there a venue hotel? And if not, what is the lodging situation like near the venue? Use the Shift key, people! Keyboard manufacturers everywhere are ineffably saddened when you ignore what they made just for you! -

Array There is not a venue hotel however, there are many hotels nearby. The event is on campus at the University of Maryland, here is a list of hotels nearby (from the university). http://www.uga.umd.edu/admissions/vi...mmodations.asp -

Array Wow Inq are you actually thinking about heading up? I guess if folks out your way are starting to look at the Cherry Blossom its rep is finally starting to spread! Post if you are coming up, I might actually show up a day early to meet the legend in person... Just another lost soul saved by the (hit) First Church of EPEE!

A propos airfares, best airport to fly into (IMHO) would likely be BWI (between DC and B'more), alternatives being Dulles and Reagan, but you'd have to contend with DC traffic...
And yay, we're over the threshold in prereg numbers (MxE). Then again, I woulnd't be surprised by numbers doubling with walkins... -

Array oh god no, not the walkins. siiigh at least they pay more money -

I was bummed that you guys aren't having the phoenix cup again this year. I was looking forward to it! I had a great time attending the last two years...
As for other strong tournaments... the NYAC Mercury Cup epee events have grown to be, arguably, some of the strongest regional events in the country. This weekend should feature (including walk-ins) around 70+ fencers, including a whopping 29 A's, 15 of which are on the senior point list.
That means: - There will be 3-4 A's in each pool
- There will be 2 national point list fencers in each pool
- From the 32 on you will likely be fencing only A's
- From the 16 on you will likely only be fencing those on the point list
- To win, you will probably have to consecutively beat 4 of the top 50 fencers in the country.
We are very happy with the way the event has been growing, and the support that all of the epee fencers in the region have given us in making it an outstanding multi-event cup.

Array Shosh-
Quick question. "The engraving depicts fencers in a Arcadian landscape near the National Tidal Basin." Is the engraving the same as last year's, different, but the same descriptor applies, or different and the discriptor on the website is merely out of date?

ps I hope to have an answer to your pm soon "Oh but you can't expect to wield supreme executive power just because some watery tart threw a sword at you!" -

Array the same guy is doing the engravings this year, but it will be a different engraving. I am not sure if the discriptor is correct, Steve H. took care of it (the artist is a friend of his0. I know it will prob have something to do with fencing and DC
ps. fair nuf

ps. fair nuf Sorry but it is going to be the same engraving with some added ornamentation. Will Fleishell from BP&E who did the engraving just didn't have the time to do a new one this year. Will is one of the top portrait engravers in the World (engraved Lincoln on the current five dollar bill) and gets TOP dollar for his work so this adds to the value. You can read about Will here: http://www.gwu.edu/~magazine/archive...i_onmoney.html -

Does seem not quite level to say "has created an engraving for the 2007 Cherry Blossom Open" if it's actually the engraving for the 2006 Cherry Blossom Open, with a bit of added ornamentation.
"Framed prints made from a limited hand pressing" (emphasis added) also is somewhat questionable if a new printing is made from the same plates the next year. Granted, with the addition, I suppose it could be considered a different image, and therefore a different edition, but....
I get how much time it takes to make such an image, and really appreciate that it was done last year. That said, it certainly removes a considerable amount of the uniqueness of the award when it is repeated in subsequent years. One of the great things about the award last year is that it was absolutely unique, and not something obtainable in any other tournament.
Hopefully I'll do well enough next month that it'll be an issue of how best to display two nearly-but-not-quite identical pieces. :)

You know Brad I'd be happy to take that problem off your hands... I now dangle to the left....my tassle. Get your minds out of the gutter.
