#81 | | Guest | Ich bin ein Berliner is actually correct. It *does* mean "I am a jelly donut", but it's the equivalent of maybe in English saying, "I am a Frankfurter" or "I am a Hamburger". People knew what he meant.
PS: In German, the word for a Viennese is Wiener.. I think they outlaw Wiener shops in Vienna for that reason. You have to call them.. I dunno. Something else.

| To Mengarath,
That's right!
To Screaming_Girl,
No, JFK's intention was to say "I am a Berliner" because he was addressing the people of Berlin. He did not intend to refer to himself as a jelly donut. Kind of like when that one US president gave the British people the 'V' symbol for victory but he had his hand the wrong way therefore giving them the "up yours" symbol.

What's really funny is, on an episode of "Buffy, the Vampire Slayer," the Spike character actually DID the nasty Brit gesture on camera. Obviously, no one in the editing booth knew what it meant!
BTW, my old "I'll be mellow when I'm dead" tag line isn't original. It's actually the title of oen my my favorite Wierd Al Yankovik songs, off his very first album.
My currrent tag is a variation of a line in a novelty song called "Star Trekkin'"

The actual quote is:
"Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio: a fellow of infinite jest..."

Not very religious, but I just can't shake that Catholic education.

OK here's one in the same vein:
"The opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference.
The opposite of art is not ugliness, it's indifference.
The opposite of faith is not heresy, it's indifference.
And the opposite of life is not death, it's indifference."
Anyone going to take a shot at this or my first one?
Paolo | Will noone solve this one ? I am curious to know the answer.

#94 | | Guest | Space, yeah, I know he meant Berliner as in "Citizen of Berlin". But it works both ways. A hamburger is a sandwich and a citizen of Hamburg at the same time. It sounds odd, but it's correct.
Oh, and I have a quote for ya too. "Violence is the last resort of the incompetent."
