    new year's resolutions...

You knew we had to have a topic on this one. Okay...new year's resolutions...fencing style. Let's wrack our brains and come up with the best we can do.

I promise to go for the simple attacks rather than those flicks.
I resolve to take the blade of an opponent who's reach is greater than mine, lest I impale myself on his extension.
I resolve to test my weapons the night before each tournament.

To keep this from happening any more:

This is my U-rated weapon arm after an evening of encounters with some B-rated épéeists.

Hmm . . that happened to me, but on my leg. It was quite pretty.

I won't drink as much as I did on New Year's Eve.
Man, It was probably fun when I was doing it, but the result after about six hours of sleep is definitely too painful to be worth anyone's fun.

I resolve not to scrimp on my cardio warm-ups.

I resolve to observe my opponents more carefully, and adjust my style accordingly.

I resolve not to get distracted by outside forces when I'm on the piste.

I resolve to be able to fix my weapon, ALL BY MYSELF! I would resolve not to break it in the first place, but I think I should at least be realistic.

I resolve to do my exersices every single day so my muscles (little more than rubber bands) don't atrophy and then hurt like hell during practice.

As for bruises - I once had a nice matching set on my chest. One big purple and yellow one above the breast protector and one big black and green one below the breast protector. And I was fencing foil! I get more bruises in foil than I've EVER gotten in epee.

    My resolutions:

    1. From now on, when I attack, I will have a plan B and will keep my options open enough to execute it.

    2. I will maintain my en garde position longer and will not be suckered by so many feints.

    3. I will pay more attention to distance. This follows #1 too.

    4. I will not measure my performance against fencers who are 20 years younger than me with twice as much experience.

Resolve: That I will listen to my instincts more, and that voice in my head less.

That I will not make a big deal when I miss any easy point.

That I will always be ready to fence and kill, kill, kill, as is my destiny (hehe) .

That I will realize new year's resolutions are things I will TRY to achieve, but in the long run, don't really expect to keep. ugh.

That arm is terrible. Stop fencing epee & go to foil.

Actually get a hit or two on those top-20-in-the-country fencers! (right now, I think as my arm is going forward they can get five touches on me.)
