    Local Oddities

We all have something odd which can only be found in the area in which we live, be it a giant ball of yarn, or even a two headed fish in a local "museum" somewhere.

AFAIK, The biggest (and perhaps only) hill in my city is actually a 60 ft tall 800 ft long mound of trash, and is actually a city park.

    Mount Trashmore

Anybody else have weird local places, events, etc?

I love local oddities! I'll have to think of something local, but here are a few weird things I've come across in other locations.

Whitehorse, Yukon is in itself an odd place..... but one of my favourite local weirdness is a 4-story log cabin skyscraper in the downtown area. It is the tallest building and it is made of logs.... very cool... and weird.

There's also a little island between Vancouver Island and the mainland that has a "castle" made out of concrete blocks. This guy built it himself (after years of obsessing) and it is really strange. I think his wife left him at some point in the process.

My favourite room was the two twin beds in the "honeymoon suite".

Whitehorse is the first place I ever had the pleasure of poutine! The world's smallest desert is between Whitehorse and Carcross. Oh, and Whitehorse also has the Beringia Museum, where visitors can chuck an atlatl at plywood Pleistocene megafauna. What a cool town.
And yet, to me, what is this quintessence of dust?

Just in case anybody local hadn't already figured out who I am... my town has an interesting (and archaeologically challenged) rock formation known as the Westford Knight.

Some say that the carving on the rock - sword impression and all - commemorates a fallen member of the party of Scottish Earl Henry Sinclair back in 1398. And oooh! It may even have ties to the Knights Templar! Conspiracies abound! Where is Dan Brown when we need him to write another DaVinci Code? This is likely hogwash, but we get all sorts of nutjobs coming through town every year to visit the rock.

Anyway, you can visit it virtually here:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westford_Knight and here:

Enjoy your stay! And y'all come back now, ya hear?

Hmmmm....everything and nothing at all is odd about NYC. Our barometer of odd is a little different than most places.

Crystal Palace park is home to a venerable collection of concrete dinosaurs. They date back to the 1850s.

    Seriously!

Mwahahahahahaha have you ever been to England?!?!?!?! Read your compatriot Bill Bryson's "Notes From a Small Island". Truly he appreciates our oddness.....

    Let's see:

    Windiest corner in North America.
Only about a 1/2 hours drive from the centre of the country.

Oh, yeah, our street system is pretty unique, too.

I am generally considered to be the local oddity...

I can't think of anything around here, but my boyfriend lives/fences in Minneapolis and on the drive up I-35 I always pass signs for the Spam Museum...of course, the Spam Song from Monty Python starts running through my head every time!

I'm with Louweasel. I lived in Sydenham for a little while and went to visit those terrible concrete lizards (yes, that means dinosaurs) once. They could certainly be considered an oddity.

Wow, really? My first London flat was in Sydenham - Venner Road, opposite the station. Good to see another (ex) denizen of Saaaaaf London on the boards.

But I see you are in Cambridge now - watch out so you don't become urban, squat, and packed with guile...

It's been three years since I lived there and I've been back from Cambridge for a year now, I just haven't been back to fencing.net to update my location. But when I was in Sydenham I was living in an apartment directly across from the pub on the corner of the street where the station was (sorry, I can't remember the name of the pub anymore, but it certainly provided some lively entertainment on weekends around last call...
