Array Don't screw up at this year's JOs and then go partying afterwards... Don't want this to happen, with some grouchy fan making bets on you or something. -

Array Yikes.
Someone remind me: Was it in Brazil where a World Cup soccer/football player who accidentally scored against his own team was shot and killed by an irate fan?

-p Columbia, after they lost to the US in the World Cup (1994? Whenever the US hosted, anyway) pool play.

-B Ah, I thought it was somewhere south of here...
I can't remember: was it the losing goal?

Array They lost 2-1. I think it was the first goal, but don't recall for certain.

Last I checked there was no word on why this man was shot. Seems unlikely (although admittedly still possible) that they were angry fans or bookies considering that his team lost and he was a star player (i.e. I don't think he was the reason they lost and he would've been a valuable asset for the future; correct me if I'm wrong). Even if I am wrong and it does turn out to be gambling gone atrociously wrong isn't this thread (or at least the OP) more than just a little tasteless? I now dangle to the left....my tassle. Get your minds out of the gutter.

Array I think the Brazilian (or Columbian) guy got shot because he accidentally kicked the ball into his own team's net. Sorta like accidentally hitting yourself in fencing and giving the opponent the light (wonder if it's possible to rig the scoring machine to detect that: would make saber fencers less likely to wind up if they know that touching their own target would yield a touch for the opponent). -
If your sabre is touching your lame (or other conductive equipment) and the sabre is contacted by the opponent's sabre, that's a light. -

From Wikipedia: In 1994, defender Andrés Escobar scored an own goal in a World Cup match against the United States; shortly after the team returned to Colombia, Escobar was murdered by the drug cartels that had lost huge bets on the world cup games -
You'd think the drug cartels would make enough money on the sale of product to avoid needing to gamble on soccer matches... -

But then, what do you expect? WTG, edew "Their interpretation is, however, refuted most elegantly by your system of radioactive atom + amplifier + charge of gun powder + cat in a box"
