| Fencing and dreadlocks. Hey all. I've been thinking of getting dredlocks for a long time and i have finally decided to, once my hair grows out. Any of you fencers have dreadlocks? Do the make fencing and putting on the mask a problem? Hope you people can help me.

| I (unfortunately) don't and never have had dreadlocks. I did, however, have a pretty large amount of hair for a long time that I wore in a ponytail. My hair has a lot of volume, so at times, it was huge. As long as you can keep it out of your face, you shouldn't have any problem.
Good luck! Dreads are awesome!

| If you fence foil or saber you have to keep your dreads off of the lamé just like any kind of long hair. |

| Yeah, other than keeping your hair off of the lame none of my freinds with dreads have any problems fencing.

| I had long hair. I'd wad it up in to a bun to keep it off of my lame because I hated tucking it in. Dreadlocks might be trickier though.
I cut my hair very short after I graduated from college. It was one less thing to worry about while I was fencing. Plus, I didn't get headaches from having my hair tied back all day.

| The LP contour fit mask might make it easier to fit dreadlocks under.

| The fit system of the mask has never really seemed to be a particularly huge issue to me since I've been growing hair or to others I know with cpious hair. The one fencer I know with serious dreads uses a standard mask.

| Shouldn't be a problem. But aren't athletes with dreads supposed to be NFL running backs? |

| I have long hair and with the contour fit I can wear my hair in a bun under the contour disc, therfore keeping me hair fully off my target.

| Long hair is a definite asset, regardless of style.
Any fencer with long hair can cause it to fall, and thus legitimately ask for a short delay to readjust. You can even get the director to ask YOU for the delay if you aren't fencing epee. Works at least as well as shoes coming untied. I've seen someone get away with it twice in the same bout, but I wouldn't recommend it. |
