Trip to Iraq - Not offensive enough I guess

What was the purpose of moving this disgusting post rather than just deleting it all together? I have a hunch, but I'll give you (Gav) the benefit of the doubt.

You should be ashamed for not deleting it immediately and letting this trash get any attention at all. Shame on you.

Am I the only one personally offended by this?

Read Gav's post at the end of it. It's going to be deleted, but it's staying up for the time being for "administrative purposes".

In the mean time, don't click on it.

Why do you have to be a drama queen about it? Did you PM Gav and ask him to take it down instead of making a new thread about it?

Well it's good to see Slim's usual quality of thoughtful insight; which is especially applicable to the workings of my mind. Of course there is a vast liberal conspiracy that I am part of which thinks that these images are a worthwhile critique. And I am also a 8' baby eating [muslim] reptile from the planet Zargon.

The creator of the post had earned an administrative penalty by putting this on the board. I am not sure whether that will stand if the thread is removed so I've sent a message to the other admins to take a look. I have actually emailed Craig and Noodle about that thread and I want their input before I delete it. I fully anticipate deleting the offending thread later today.

What a weird board this is. You get criticised for deleting stuff, and criticised for not deleting stuff. I don't actually know why I bother.

I picked the Politics folder because it's not as heavily browsed as the others and its denizens are [mostly, but with exceptions] grown-ups.

Would it have made everyone feel better if I had left open?

I'm sorry to everyone if I inadvertantly offended you by not censoring it immediately. That was not my intent.

Maybe we need 2 Politics fora - one for right-wing crazies like Slim to complain about things not being censored fast enough, and another for all the pot-smoking Commie hippy losers who'll moan if you delete things.

We could give them little icons - the right wing forum can have an NRA badge, and the left wing one could have a hammer and sickle, or maybe a ganja leaf.

I agree that a fencing forum is an inappropriate place for this, but I am not offended by it. Nor am I offended by your reviving it to show us all your feigned disgust. But I am amused.

I don't think this person had any intention of posting on this forum regularly anyway. My guess would be he went around and posted the same thing on as many boards as he could, and this board is not hard to miss.

If you dont find pictures of people burning alive offensive, that's your issue.

There is nothing feigned about my disgust.

I find government and media suppression of the ugly truth of war more offensive than the pictures themselves. For the record, I find people burning alive more offensive than both the pictures and the suppression of them.

Standing up for the man who posted.

I think he has the right to post the thread. He's a fencer and a soldier. He went to Iraq and found the experience difficult and wants to show us. If you don't like it, turn the station. This is the fencers' political thread and he has freedom of speech. It's a lot better than some of the gross vulgarities that offend sooooooo many people that we have actually gone to war over it.

Take your blinders off and maybe you'll even fence better.

A salute to the fencer who poster.

Really? You feel the government and media (and myself I guess) are conspiring to surpress your access to "the truth of war"? Thats interesting. I believe the government has gone out of it's way to embed reporters to make sure they cover and report the "truths of war" accurately. Turn on the TV sometime and tune into CNN or the BBC. You'll see plenty of footage of snipers killing US soldiers, mobs dragging burned bodies of soldiers in the streets, IEDs blowing apart HumVees, or markets full of civilians killed by car bombs.

It's all there for you if thats what honks your horn. Party on.

The post that started this discussions is a twisted political statement that gratuitiously uses some very horrific images. I find the images digusting and disturbing. It's not what I expect to see here and make me wonder about the people who moderate and frequent this board.

And I wont be surprised if its not removed. It obviously offends the wrong crowd. I suspect if it showed some Iraqi civilians ablaze, it would have been removed immediately.

You seem to be assuming that the poster is a fencer. Isn't it curious that the poster joined the board right before making the post? Also that he hasn't posted anything else? I don't believe that this person is a fencer and is just spamming the board, like we see once in a while, spreading this propaganda.

So you're saying that objective war reporting is:
footage of snipers killing US soldiers...bad guys killing good guys
mobs dragging burned bodies of soldiers in the streets...more bad guys killing good guys
IEDs blowing apart HumVees...more bad guys killing good guys
markets full of civilians killed by car bombs...Do you get my point yet?

    Remember, I'm using your examples.

But what gets your panties in a wad? When someone has the audacity to show American corpses coming home in flag covered coffins. Oh yeah, your embeded reporters couldn't publish those photos, could they? Or showing Americans who have lost their limbs and more? That offends you?

Ask yourself why. Are you offended by the carnage or are you just afraid that someone will use it to advance an agenda that is different than yours?

let's not forget that the AP has admitted to making up sources and stories. the media, esp. CNN (communist news network), tends to leave out the stories of the iraqis that cheer and thank our soldiers in the streets. i live near a military base and know pleanty of soldiers. all of them tell me the same thing, the media portrays the wrong picture. while the media only focuses on the negative of war, they fail to report the huge positives. iraqis do not need to worry about their political freedoms anymore thanks to our troops. why don't we hear about this?

Slim is right about the media and about the original post. it's disgusting and an attack on our troops. if yall don't appreciate the war on terror move out of the US. go live somewhere where you have no freedom of speech and religion. then maybe you will appreciate our troops more. and don't say play the "oh i love the US" card because your criticizing what we stand for.

haha. If you don't agree with us, go move somewhere else because you don't love freedom of speech. Hahahahahaha.

What is up with you people? The only person who still thinks we're winning in Iraq is Donald Rumsfeld, and he got fired. We're losing troops every day and we're not making progress. You can't force democracy on a people that are not ready for it, and we found that out the hard way.

I don't think anyone doubts that many Iraqis support us. (OK, some people do, but I'm not one of them.) However, we need more than many Iraqis to set up a permanent government, and we're just not there yet.

Meanwhile, thousands of soldiers are dying. Should the daily headline be "Some soldiers greeted by Iraqis?"

thank you for being one of the few on the other side that agrees that the iraqis support us.

i think a point Slim was alluding to and I should have made earlier is that the media's depiction of the amount of troops dying each day in iraq, while accurate, is exaggerated. remember in the world wars, korea, and vietnam how we had sometimes hundreds and thousands of KIAs a day? we've had under 3000 in 3 and a half years. the other thing that i think i talked about in the original post is that we have a volunteer based army. our soldiers know that they may end up dying. if they signed up thinking that their job had nothing to do with death they're (it's harsh, but true) stupid! we need to support our troops and curb the negative exposure they receive.
