Array Fencing Game for Nintendo Wii Hey...I just spent a few hours camped out at Wal Mart in Somersworth, NH today to pick up a Nintendo Wii for my daughters for Christmas (got one...YAY!) Based on how it's supposed to work, it seems like the ideal game setup to have a "Fencing" game. What do you all think? I'm not much of a gamer...The last one I owned was an ATARI. But I see some real possibilities here. And my brother has a high-definition projector he uses for his games...we could really get a good setup going. Any smart programmers out there? -

Array There's a game called "RedBlade" or something. It's a martial arts sword game - judging by the ad anyway. Looks interesting. But it's a console game so I am not really all that interested. -

Array There's a facebook group: "Petition for an FIE Fencing Game to come out on Nintendo Wii" A synonym is a word you use when you can't spell the word you first thought of. -

Array I have four close friends I won't be seeing much of for a little while who all got Wiis at the midnight launch this morning. A fencing game would be fun for fencers but would not have enough mass appeal to be commercially viable. Maybe a simple version if they make a second Wii Sports? -

Array I think fencing is taking off as a more "commercial" sport, so perhaps in the near future a fencing game might be a remote possibility. -

Array One of my clubmates got a Wii a few weeks ago and it is in fact a lot of fun. Than coming from someone who normaly doesn't care much for video games too. Several fencers here have talked about a Wii fencing game- and I admit it has possibilities, but excuse me if I don't get all enthusiastic about it. And I actually agree with you this generation- except for the Wii. I mean, you have to admit it has possibilities. If nothing else it does actually offer a different experience than a PC, which most consoles don't. It's a good party machine. -

Array P.S. The game is called Red Steel and it blows, which is weird b/c most of the Wii's launch games roxxorz. -

Array A fencing game would be cool, if you see the ads (UK ones at least) they have golf, boxing, tennis as well as others. So (proper) fencing would be cool! Asprin Blackadder :But I thought we were fighting with swords. Wellington : Swords! What do you think this is, the middle ages? Only girls fight with swords these days. -

The sword fight scenes are largely scripted, it's more of an FPS. Fun multiplayer, but an overall poor launch title that mainly relies on the novelty of the controller. The pen may be mightier than the sword, but why pick just one? -

Array I'd be interested more in using it for training. Think about it, you could use it to refine your coordination and response to certain actions. Also, extending it to be multiplayer, over the internet, you could actually train against an opponent like you were fencing in the same room.
I actually think that petitioning the FIE (or USFA) to look into this would be a good idea. Wii dev units are not expensive (unlike PS3 or Xbox360 units), and if the FIE/USFA could pony up some money to get someone working on a fencing training sim it might actually work. I'm sure they have lots of money devoted to development of future fencers and training facilities and equipment. This could just come from that money.

I remember back in the day, and more recently, we've had: "mind controlled joysticks", Virtual reality, "light guns", motion sensitive cameras etc ...
A gimmick doesn't make a good game. An extra box under the telly doesn't make a good game. A good game (normally this means well designed and developed) makes a good game.
There have been good console games. I've even owned consoles. The plain fact is that console games tend to be aimed at the lowest denominator.
And that doesn't mean that all PC games are good either ...
I'd recommend visiting the Game On exhibition if you get the chance.
You also forget that just because you have a motion sensitive controller for the Wii (with the ergonomics of a TV remote) doesn't mean you would never have one for the PC. -

Array A game using the type of controller the Wii uses for fencing would be cool, espcially if all weapons could be done. Asprin Blackadder :But I thought we were fighting with swords. Wellington : Swords! What do you think this is, the middle ages? Only girls fight with swords these days. -
it can be done, its just a matter of someone doing it, and whether they'd make a profit on it or not.
the controller can sense everything, all movement.
and the game out currently is "red steel" -

Array A Wii fencing game would be especially good with those "video glasses" I have been hearing about...imagine that...total immersion in a fencing game to work on your second intention attack... -

Array While the Wii is cool and a fencing game might be too, I don't know if it is too the point where it would actualy be a good training tool yet. "Being a good feind is like being a photographer, you have to search for the right moments." Similar Threads -
