| I predict much fun at the Vet World Champs.
Inq - note that if you do go ahead with the tinting, simply procure an untreated visor as backup and be prepared to swap it out if someone objects. It will cost a little bit, but should allow you to continue fencing with the same mask, a substantial savings. |

| I understand that the rationale for the bag is to prevent deterioration of the window during storage and shipment. Which is a reasonable recommendation. Since there are no specifications for the bag, use an old pillow case or sew a towel into a "bag".

OK, another question. My coach claims that affixing opaque film ( like window-tinting material ) to the inside of the Lexan panel is prohibited by the rules. I can find no such passage in either the rules or the material regulations. Am I missing it, or is my coach all wet? | You do realize that 'opaque' means that no light gets through, right? In reference to light transmission objects can either be opaque (transmits practicaly no light), translucent (transmits light, but scatters or diffuses it), or transparent (allows light to pass unimpeded, although it may refract or reduce the light coming through).
I have seen fencers, even with traditional metal masks use opaque tape on the inside of the mask above the eyes (duct tape, tip tape) to prevent glare from light soursces that were distracting (like a window). I don't know any rules against this. As for tinting, I have no idea, but I think it would be cool to have a mirrored visor- although it would proably be ilegal due to its distracting nature.

I truly hope M. Roch is there to object to it, too. I relish the opportunity to tell him in person that with all due respect to the office he holds he is a bonehead and to "discuss" several of his decisions, the mandatory use of visor masks for sabre among them...
Of course, all this assumes that I can get there first. Quote: |

| Good idea. As someone else pointed out, the expiration date for the panel may be an issue anyway by then.
Can one replace the panels oneself, without special tools? ( I haven't even taken the thing out of the plastic bag yet. ) Quote:

I was just concerned that there might be some obscure requirement for a manufacturer's bag, and I didn't want to run afoul of the armourers. Quote:

The film will, hopefully, let light in from the outside but not out from within, thus rendering my mug semi-invisible to the all-important spectators and the television cameras which will no doubt begin appearing at fencing tournaments any day now. Heh, if I must suffer the distractions of garish colored lamés, designs on masks, and screaming fencers, they can just suffer one in return....

| I'm afraid having Roche show up for the Veterans Worlds is expecting them to get more respect than I am afraid they will. |

That is of course if your oponent looks into your eyes- I don't.

At least in Limoges in 2003, Krems in 2004, and, I believe, in Bath this year. Then the organizing committee has to provide a car, with driver, 24 hours a day. Plus a luxury suite in the best hotel in town. Hundreds, if not thousands, of unnecessary expense.

... | You can replace it yourself. But for at least one brand you need a 5.5 mm nutdriver. The PBT needs only a small Phillips head screw driver.

Is it in his contract or something? If it were me I'd be tempted to point silently toward the nearest car rental agency.
Of course I might not get selected as host next time around. Such is life.

They have to invite (there is nothing about him required to accept) the FIE president or their representative. Also there is nothing about a requirement for a car. The only requirement are tourist class airfaire, accomodations (it could be a flea-bag hotel, doesn't require the best) and daily allowance.
There is nothing about the same requirement or any other requirement for the Veterans.

| Inq,
Rene won't have an issue with it, mostly because he won't be there to see it. He doesn't show up til much later in the day, by which stage you'll be knocked out .
I think you're much more likely to run into a snooty official at domestic level trying to enforce 'non-rules' - as you would put it.
Personally, my opinion is that it violates the 'spirit' of transparent visor masks. Exactly how much spirit is in them is a debatable point, but if there is any then you're definately crossing the line .
edit: Inq will be going to Sydney? That might almost warrant a trip home.... |

| Well---maybe. There's some pretty stiff competition in the 50+ age group. Korfanty, Mormando, Wang, Anthony, Jacobson et al. I have to make it past at least 2 of them, which is, shall we say, questionable...
