Array Why not fencing? Check this out:

They have all major sports, except fencing... We should ask them do add it to the collection! - Epee is the Louis Vuitton bag of fencing: only the best can get it, and the rest of the masses must content themselves with cheap knockoffs (sabre, foil)
- To not recognize the power of the French grip is to be in denial
-
I think fencing would be a little violent.. Jesus holding a sword (noone would know it was an epee/foil/sabre) P.S. My AOL screen name is Holy Kiwi DMc Send me a message sometime -

Array Actually, "sword" is mentioned in the Bible, particularly when Jesus is mentioned. I can't remember where, but it's there.
And, don't forget...there's a time for peace, a time for war...a time for fencing...a time for DE's... "Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind."

Array I really don't think you should make s tatue of Jesus doing any of that sort. It is disrespectful to the CAtholic Religion. -

But hockey, there's a peaceful sport.
Or martial arts, nothing violent about that right?
Fencing would fit perfectly in with those statues. We're no threat, people, we're not dirty, we're not mean
We love everybody but we do as we please
When the weather's fine,
We go fishin' or go swimmin' in the sea
We're always happy
Life's for livin', yeah, that's our philosophy -
yes but he's playing it with little kids, and martial arts is defensive. Martial arts teaches discipline. martial arts teaches you to keep your cool. Fencing well is go at someone with a sword lol P.S. My AOL screen name is Holy Kiwi DMc Send me a message sometime -

Fencing teaches you discipline and how to keep your cool in pressure situations.
And he could be teaching fencing form to the little kids, just like the he is to ballerinas.
But really, I'm glad fencing's not on that page.

Wait, this is Catholicism and they don't have a 'genocide' Jesus!?!? What's this world coming to? What about the 'pedophelia' Jesus? And the 'shut out outsiders so that they'll never learn of our misdeeds' Jesus? Those things are completely antithetical to Christianity as a whole! Ooo, or we could have 'hypocrisy' Jesus, where he says blatantly contradictory thigns when you put a nail through his hand or foot... -

Array Interestingly, Christians (myself included) don't corner the market on being hypocrites (I'm not Catholic, for further reference). I think being a hypocrite is entirely human, & isn't reserved for any one religion.
Even more interesting: Even though someone may do something rotten in someone else's name, it doesn't mean that said person supports such things. People twist & abuse others' intentions quite a bit...another entirely human thing that isn't reserved for any one religion.
In fact, it's rather hypocritical to be critical of another's beliefs, when one wouldn't like the same treatment should the other person be critical of THEIR beliefs.
Amazing how stuff like that works!
Anyway, back to the ACTUAL topic: There are very few opportunities for fencers to show their sport. Jewelry, "mainstream" clothing, etc...I noticed the very same thing when I first started fencing & didn't know any vendors or others who just wanted to show off our beloved sport. I guess either you love fencing...or you've never heard of it (except for ::shudder:: movies' depiction of fencing). "Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind."

I believe that Jesus says at one point "I am come to bring not peace but a sword".
People have gathered somewhere along the way that Christianity is a pacifist faith. Just goes to show that Muslims have no corner on the market for misinterpreting scripture... Use the Shift key, people! Keyboard manufacturers everywhere are ineffably saddened when you ignore what they made just for you! -
Oh, btw, I'm Christian, well, technically, but given that the iconography is being used by the Church for their worldly means, why not use them for all of their worldy means. And true, christianity doesn't have a corner on the whole hypocrisy thing, but some of the most horrific things have been committed in the name of "god" (altough other horrid atrocities have been done in the name of "freedom" too). -

Array Why not fencing?
Cause Jesus knows better. -
Im still wondering how these statues are disrespectful to the catholic religion.
Shrug.. We must walk consciously only part way toward our goal, and then leap in the dark to our success.

No, they are not - Catholicism doesn't have a law against making pictures of Jesus. Some protestant confessions used to. They destroyed many pictures in the Middle Ages for this reason. Wer ficht hat schon gewonnen -

Well... you are referring to „2Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani??” (Matthew 27:46) i guess?
After hanging on the cross for about 3 hours Jesus is reported to have said this. The translation "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" misses the point.
Jesus is starting psalm 22,
a psalm that all of his countrymen and women would have prayed in danger. Some things you can't just translate, you have to tell what it means.
The psalm ends like this:
28 For the kingdom is the LORD'S, * and he is the Governor among the nations.
29 All such as be fat upon earth * have eaten, and worshipped.
30 All they that go down into the dust shall kneel before him; * and no man hath quickened his own soul.
31 My seed shall serve him: * they shall be counted unto the Lord for a generation.
32 They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness * unto a people that shall be born, whom the Lord hath made.
BTW, i think those hideous statues are just kitsch. Wer ficht hat schon gewonnen -

Array Actually, after 3 hours on the cross, I'd at least think he'd say "Hey...these nails sting!"
I was raised Catholic, but married an agnostic...what does THAT tell you about my feelings for my own religion?
Don't get me started. -
Er, actually the entire hypocrisy was based more upon the actions of the Church etc. and everything that they'd done in the name of Jesus. I'm not one for quoting biblical verse, simply because i think the bible's too preachy Yeah, how's that for hypocrisy... -

your religion is not what you are raised as but a matter of choice. I was raised Catholic too (if i was raised as anything) but didn't marry in church, only in the mayor's office, was great.
no hypocracy involved Wer ficht hat schon gewonnen -

The bible has no moral authority for me. I quoted this psalm to clear up the popular "My god, my god, why hast thou forsaken me?" misunderstanding.
And once again to those statues: Maybe they experimented with a fencing Jesus but a guy with mustaches, long hair and a sword reminded more of other well known characters than of Jesus

Every time you poke someone with a sword you make Jesus cry "Computers in the future may have only 1, 000 vacuum tubes and perhaps only weigh 1 1/2 tons."
