| Returning fencer checking in... Hello all,
I am just getting back into fencing after oh say about a 20 year hiatus...
I fenced for 2 years in college around '86 - '87 then not until this October when I started back at the beginning...
I used to be all about saber when in college, but now I think I want to concentrate on the finesse of foil for a while. I may get my bravado back...
I will be searching and lurking the forum for info, posting now and again.
I am just getting my kit together, I still have my foil from college, it needed a new grip I bought a jacket from the fencing post, a Leon Paul F100 mask w/ contour fit, a basic glove and some Ontisuka Tiger Fencing LA shoes. They really fit my kinda wide sz. 12 feet. And the price can't be beat at $49.99. I think I'm on the right track for a returning beginner...
The class meets on Mondays and I try to get back there at least one more time a week to do footwork and point control exercises.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You MAY want to go watch some electric sabre before you commit to that idee. It's very different now that what you experienced: In those days, a cut had to be purposefully delivered in order to be counted as valid; now, it's very easy for inadvertent blade-lame contact to occur, and it ALL counts!
What with the .125 second lockout on the scoring machine, it's a very different proposition that I have dubbed "the hot stick model".
Good luck with the foil thing! Since you didn't do that much before, you'll probably be happy with the current foil rules.
Have fun! |

| It was a pun.
My chief weapon is the pun...the pun and the rant about punctuation and capitalization...the rant about capitalization and punctuation, and the pun.... My TWO weapons are the rant about capitalization and punctuation, and the pun...and grumpy cynicism.... My THREE weapons are the rant about capitalization and punctuation, the pun, and a grumpy cynicism...and an almost fanatical hatred of screaming, Lexan masks and colored uniforms.... My FOUR...no... AMONGST my weapons.... Amongst my weaponry...are such elements as rant about capitalization and punctuation, the pun---
I'll come in again.

I'll come in again. | What he means is he's a grumpy bastard. Occasionally he says something amusing, though I think it tends to be accidental.
And good choice on the foily thing, btw.

I'll come in again. | I'm pretty sure that Inq has found himself in the same position I have. We have to bite our tongues whenever we hear someone say "The clerk told Bob and I that they were out of stock" or some such. If you don't know what's wrong with that sentence, you probably never will. I give up. |

More to the point, welcome back and good luck with the foil thing.

| I hope that after attaining the perspective and wisdom of age that you can open yourself to the Joy That Is Epee in addition to your interest in foil. And perhaps a modicum of sabre as well.
I once had a hamster named Jody. A delightful creature, always full of vim and vigor, and amusing me to no end with furry little antics! ... I miss Jody still.
