veeco, surely you jest. (i have been a smoker for 11 years, and recently quit, and i have found a great increase in stamina on the piste)
BUT, that is my one off evangelical thingy, I REFUSE to bbe one of those ex smokers, who try and convert everyone, spark one up if you fancy one. I dont really care

| I have never smoked, never will. I have ethical issues in this area.
I though do know fencers who smoke. They have been smoking since they started and they get breathless at even the smallest lunge, they are forever coughing and they find it highly difficult to be good. They all blame it on smoking, but I have seen not one of them attempting to quit (even when they say that they would feel better if they did.)
Anyone know whats up with that?
(dont mean to offend any smokers - sorry!)

| My Father works on various studies with Oxford University regarding heart/lung disease and smoking. The figures are quite horrific.

| These conversations are why I quit tobacco and went straight to smoking crack.

I was just trying to explain the fact that a lot of fencers smoke and some seem to do well by the fact that smoking will not be as detrimental to your fencing as it would be to you if, say you were a long distance runner.
But if you really want to make it to the top, and put all your chances on your side, then definitely, don't smoke.

Would you say the same thing about drinking as well?

So though I can't speak fro veeco, I would not say the same about drinking.

On the other hand, probably drinking every once in a while is OK, just not before practise or competitions. While smoking even once in a while is bad, drinking once in a while is not.
But I believe it's a personal choice and YMMV.
