    Pictures

Ok I know this is going to be really strange, but I need to sketch a picture of someone famous for my art class. I decided I wanted to sketch a fencer, and figured I would be able to find a picture of fencers that won events from the olympics, but I cannot find any. If any one knows of a picture of fencers from the olympics or any other famous fencer please let me know. Preferably one where you can see the fencer's face, since I think part of the idea of the assignment is to pratice drawing people. Thanks in advance.

Well, Erika, how about sketching Athos and D'Artagnan?

    go to: <a href="http://www.happybubble.com/" target="_blank">http://www.happybubble.com/</a>

click on "pictures" at the top of the page, then Michigan Renaissance Festival 2002, Second Weekend: Highland Fling, Page 3, picture #2:

That's me on the left as Athos, and Ryan Judkins, saber fencer from Michigan State, in the blue as D'Artagnan.

Nice pic there Doug. If you're going for the 'look at me I'm possing for a drawing' kind of picture. Then I personally like D'Artagnon's stance, but if you want more laid back then Athos (who is my fav for character). There's Julie Smith who's at least known by fencers. I don't know where to find pics of her withotu a mask, but at least you've got the name. Other then that I don't know of anyone besides the people on here that fence.

Check out Arnd Schmitt's pic, the last one on the page. Should provide a nice portrait while still on strip.

Wow, thanks, wow, I now have to look for the picture I am going to use. Actually I just read what I actually have to draw is a caracature. (Which someone just today told me what exactly that is) so it might be kind of hard and not work like I thought it would, but oh well I will give it a try. I think my teacher (being a high school art class) is aiming for more like Brittany Spears or some one else pop-y but I don't much care, I will attempt to be different. Thanks again.

Is the one to take if you want to do a caricature. Take the least smiling of the French fencers, and there you go! A fencer with a world championship medal around his neck, looking like a dead mule.
    • Epee is the Louis Vuitton bag of fencing: only the best can get it, and the rest of the masses must content themselves with cheap knockoffs (sabre, foil)
    • To not recognize the power of the French grip is to be in denial

i think they're very difficult to sketch, you have to spend a lot of time with one person to get their faces down, and then it's still difficult, to really get them you have to be able to abstract them out on the paper, i did several of colin, and sent a pastel of an abstracted colin to craig, using a scanner. i also did him completely naked [i wanted to get the thighs- they were good, especially when i forced him to run 1/2 hour three times per week] about three nudes of colin, i'll sell them for about $100. each. then i have him in a pair of shorts, standing next to a small australian silky with a silver medal around its neck. and another of him as the spanish inquisitor, with me in the background. then a did several sketches of the entire salle including guests, running around the salle in various attire, including a bikini, and another of us at the beach. i did several fencers jousting at the park with beer cans. i'm not kidding around, we were in a sort of blithe spirit mood for a while there. oh well, it'll be okay.
