Fencing.Net Discussion Board Upgrades

The forums have been upgraded to the latest version of vBulletin. This provides some extra functionality for users and for admins. Among them are:

Multi Quote
The multi-quote feature allows users to tag multiple posts that they wish to respond to by clicking a small button on each post. Once the user clicks the reply button, each tagged post is quoted.

To increase usability, by default, only posts within the current thread are automatically quoted. If you wish to quote posts in other threads with multi-quote, you simply need to click a link on the reply page, and the text of those posts will be added without a reload.

Mark Forums Read with AJAX
If you wish to mark a forum read, you can simply click its status icon on the index page and the change will be processed without a reload. You can even mark individual sub-forums as read in the same way.

Quote Tags Link to Quoted Post
When quoting a post, the ID of the post is automatically included with the [quote] tag. When the quoted text is viewed in a thread, a small icon links back to the quoted post.

New Buddy/Ignore List Editor Saves with AJAX
Along with a new interface, your buddy and ignore lists are saved with AJAX to prevent an unnecessary reload. Additionally to make the interface even easier to use, vBulletin searches for matching users as you type their names.

Private Message Preview in Notification Emails
If you have elected to receive emails when receiving a new private message, the email will now contain more than just the name of the user who sent you the message. The title and body of the message will be included. Any BB codes in the message will automatically be converted to an equivalent plaintext version using the new plaintext bbcode parser.

Auto-Resize Oversized Image Attachments
If a member attaches an image that has dimensions larger than the administrator allows, the image will automatically resized to fit. This is similar to the auto-resizing of avatars that vBulletin 3.5 performed.

New Buddy/Ignore List Editor
The new buddy and ignore list editor allows users to be quickly added and removed from your lists, with AJAX-based assistance for name suggestion along the way. If an error occurs such as a user not being found, you can simply correct the error and continue without reloading the page.

Rate Threads with AJAX
Rating a thread can be done without a page reload now. Rate a thread like you normally would, but when you submit the rating, you’ll get a notification that your rating was accepted (or if it wasn’t) and the new thread rating will instantly appear.

Private Messages: Quota Warning
Once you have reached 90% of your private message quota, you will receive a warning telling you that you have almost reached your quota.

Full BCC Support in Private Messages
Like in an email, BCC (blind carbon-copy) allows you to hide the full list of recipients from each recipient. In previous versions of vBulletin, the “to” field acted like a BCC field. Now, the “to” field acts like the field in an email; each recipient will see all the names in the “to” field.

Podcasting Support
vBulletin 3.6 includes support for podcasting attachment files via the built in RSS feed. Please send me suggestions for podcasts and they can now be added..

Signature Images
We now have the ability to allow images in the user signatures. I'm figuring out what the permissions will be for that and which user groups/levels will be able to use it.

If you see anything weird going on with the forums, please send me a PM or post it to the Comments/Suggestions area.

Thanks,
Craig

OK, I'm assuming that's why I couldn't access the fora this morning---you were making the changes.

In which case, the only wonky thing I am noticing now is that pages are loading very, very slowly---much more slowly than before the outage...

But that will take all the fun out of the "out of context quote" thread.

Seriously, thanks for all the time you put into this site.

You can take it out by deleting the semicolon and number, as I did.

Board behaving oddly today.

In addition to the lengthy loading times for pages, I am getting frequent error messages when I try to post a reply. They say "The server is too busy right now. Please try again later."

Also, when I click on the "quote" icon, I sometimes get the multi-quote instead. When I click on the multi-quote icon, nothing whatsoever happens.

Sometimes the multi-quote icon is a pale orange color instead of blue.

BTW, when I say "lengthy loading times", sometimes it's 15 seconds, sometimes 30, and occasionally several minutes. Other times it's almost immediate.

I limited the server load so that if 500 sessions are hitting at once the 501st one gets denied. Looks like I'm moving to the dedicated server faster than expected. Of course that wasn't budgeted for yet.

We now have discounted 10 packs of the calendars and will have the 2006 World Championships DVDs next week. If you are on the email newsletter then you'll get something next week (including a coupon - hint hint).

Congrats on the exciting news!!

You were all using too many resources on the forum!

Seriously, we're upgraded right now to double the CPU and RAM that we had this morning on a VPS (Virtual Private Server) and will be moved over to a Dedicated Server in the next 48 hours.

Fencing.Net's new home will be a much needed Dual Core Pentium 4 server with loads of RAM, disk space and bandwidth. (The daily backups for the forum alone are over a gig.)

Have you considered giving Green users priority in access? I know I'd spring for an upgraded account for that.

What about automatically deleting -- after three posts -- any thread that asks what shoe or grip you use, or has a poll associated with it?

I've got to believe that would save a ton of resources!

I'm figuring out what the other priority features will be. I'm thinking that one will be access to a greater range of video archives, since those tend to burn a lot of bandwidth.

If there are other features that you would want for a membership, let me know and I'll try to roll those in.

LOL - Maybe we can program the AI bot to actually know the answers to those questions and automatically post them. Of course, the last time I turned "George" on, he just ranted on and on about god knows what.

And that's MY job.

Seriously, I was getting the "server busy" message when there were only a handful of people listed as being on line. Unless there were a WHOLE lot of invisible users or unregistered guests, how could so few people be consuming more resources than the dozens who used to be on the boards back before the hack attack?
